Wood pigeons are the biggest bird in the pigeon family

Description

They are found on farmland and woodland they are also becoming more common in city’s and towns. And they have yellow and white beak with a neck marking and some blue. We also see them in our playground.

Behaviour & lifecycle

Until they are around 16 weeks old young birds lack the neck markings and have a duller beak. They breed throughout the whole year and make a small platform out of sticks they are mostly in trees but they can be seen on the sides of a building or even on the ground.

Food/what they eat

They eat seeds, grains, nuts, sprouts, cabbages, peas, berries and sometimes insects likes snails and earthworms.

Predators 

They are eaten by foxes, badgers, sparrow hawks and falcons.

Interesting facts

There is 5.4 million pairs of wood pigeons in the UK and the number seem to be rising. They live for 4 years most of the time but it’s been proven they can live for 16 years or more.
