Fairytales and Traditional Tales

In January we learned around the context of Fairytales and Traditional Tales. We read lots of stories, dressed up as the main characters, made a caste and played with the fort and took part in lots of role play situations. We also made a chart to choose our favourite fairy tale from Snow White, Peter Pan and Pinocchio, the winner for both the morning session and afternoon session was Peter Pan, so we bought the DVD and watched it on the last day of the topic as a movie day.

Burns’ Supper

To celebrate Burns Day we had a special Scottish snack in nursery. We had the opportunity to try haggis, oatcakes and shortbread. We also had the opportunity to try Irn Bru, donated from our local business partner, Barrs. We had lots of adventurous children who tried all of our Scottish snack, but some preferred to stick to the things they knew like the fruit and shortbread!!!

December

Throughout the month of December the boys and girls have been learning all about Christmas. We learned about the Christmas story through our Nativity practises and by playing with the nativity figures and costumes. We also learned about traditions and images linked with Christmas time such as writing Christmas cards and wrapping presents.

Nativities

Both the morning and sessions did very well when performing to their audience on Friday 13th December. Thanks to everyone who helped them learn their words and for getting them dressed Christmassy for the performance.

Autumn / Winter Topic

We have been spending time this month looking at the change of seasons. We have been using our nursery garden to explore some changes and also noticed some on our walk to Condorrat Library at the end of October. We have also started to introduce some letter sounds and exploring their formation in a variety of ways.

PJ Party

We had a special Hallowe’en PJ party in nursery on 31st October. One of our parents very kindly volunteered to do face painting. We played lots of party games in the gym hall. In the nursery we ‘douked’ for apples, played hide the witch, listened to ‘Pumpkin Soup’ story and search for hallowe’en prizes in a basin of jelly. At the end of the session we had our party snack and then we were ready for bed by home time!

Light and Dark

Our topic for the last week in September and first two in October was light and dark. The children enjoyed opportunities to play in the den with torches and in the quiet room with light boxes. We looked at the sky, made shadows, made our own binoculars and had lots of fun investigating.

Caterpillars and Butterflies

At the start of our Minibeasts topic we bought some caterpillars so that the children could see the changes they make in their lives. We were very lucky to have nine out of our ten caterpillars grow into butterflies. Miss Johnston and her groups took the butterflies around the school to show everyone (and sing them a minibeast song) before setting them free in Westfield on Thursday afternoon. Here are some photos showing their final day at nursery.
