At St Ignatius’, our P1–P3 classes use a play‑based approach because research from around the world shows that children learn best through play. Play helps young children develop early reading and number skills, build confidence, solve problems, get along with others and learn to manage their emotions.
In our classrooms, we use a careful balance of different types of learning:
- Teacher‑led learning, where the teacher joins in and helps guide children’s thinking
- Teacher‑directed learning, where key skills are taught in short, focused sessions
- Child‑led play, where children explore, create and follow their own ideas
This mix means children get the important skills they need, while also having time to be curious, imaginative and independent. It allows them to learn new things in a way that feels natural, enjoyable and meaningful.
Through this approach, children at St Ignatius’ develop not only early literacy and numeracy, but also important life skills like communicating well, working with others, being resilient, solving problems and managing their own learning. These skills help them grow in confidence and prepare them for the years ahead.
