A Week of Two Months!

Another busy dynamic week in school filled with precious moments of learning across all areas of our curriculum.

In our nursery this week there has been so much happening it has been incredible, here’s Mrs. Murphy’s report…..

Outdoors the children converted the shed into a scary witches house, they covered the windows with black paper and hung Bones the skeleton from the ceiling and put a very scary spider’s web in the corner. They made a sign for the door and then made up a story about the witch who lived in the house. This can be seen displayed in the writing area. At soft play they played Halloween games such as rolling the pumpkin down the hill.

Our Eco duties continue each day outdoors.

In the Writing Area the children used the magnetic letters to spell out lots of different Halloween words. They also got a chance to write some on the pumpkin shapes.

In the Numeracy Area the theme of day and night continued to ensure all children get an opportunity to explore this. They were also busy weighing Autumn vegetables. They quickly discovered that the pumpkin was the heaviest of all the vegetables that they weighed.

In the Art Area they made Halloween decorations, a witches cauldron, scary masks and they got the chance to explore some very yucky slime.

In the snack area they made cakes for the Halloween party.

On Thursday we celebrated Halloween with a BANG! The children all looked FAB in their costumes and all had a great time. They listened to some scary stories and played Halloween bumps and pass the pumpkin. The Mini Movers coaches provided Halloween games and after some party food they danced the rest of the session away.

The lending library is now up and running with most children taking a book home this week.

Friday was a more relaxing day in nursery with the children getting to watch Room On The Broom. They recalled the party and all things Halloween in their floor books. They couldn’t go outdoors as our new outdoor equipment was being built up.

The children will have a chance to explore our new fort, boat and fenced off area this week. A big thank you again to Shotts prison for providing these items and to a very helpful gentleman from O.L.G.A Cathedral parish; Kenny McDermott, who provided the van for them to be delivered along with ‘Papa Ian’ our janitor (and big pal) and to our friendly joiner; Jim, who spent all morning putting it together.

Meanwhile in school we have been equally busy.

Monday we had our Parent Council AGM followed by our usual meeting. We have 4 new members of our Parent Council:

Mr. Paul McFadden – Imogen P5 & Jude Nursery

Mr. Stuart Angell – Callum P2

Mrs. Naomi Dobbin – Jack P2 & Emily Nursery

(and Lucy coming soon)

Clerk                                                   Mrs Helen O’Rourke

Helen has been part of our Parent Council for the last 8 years, she has been a tremendous help all through our new build process and through her efficiency as Clerk to the Board. May I take this opportunity to offer a HUGE thanks to Helen for all of her work and commitment to our school community.

Helen has decided to move on, as she no longer has children in our school, however we persuaded Helen to remain with us for the next month to allow us to find a replacement.

Tuesday evening we held our Sacramental Meetings in St. Bride’s hall. The large number of parents/guardians in attendance was wonderful. The spiritual development of our children is a key component of all we do in school and we are committed to ensuring we work closely with our children, our parish and our parents to continue our children’s faith journey and promote their spiritual development. Many thanks to all who came along from both P3 & P4 and we look forward to meeting with you all again on 2nd and 3rd of December.

Wednesday saw our joint garden gang continuing to enhance our school outdoor areas, come rain, hail or shine the ‘gang’ are outside preening and pruning. Well done to everyone involved.

Thursday we celebrated Hallowe’en in our traditional manner with our annual Dress Up Parade. This was great fun. Our whole school was in the hall dancing and singing and admiring each other’s costumes. Times like this are made all the more enjoyable through the active participation of all staff, there was a great atmosphere in the hall and it is a measure of the wonderful ethos of our school when we can all come together and dance The Time Warp as a school community. Thanks to the Management team for leading by example from the stage. (Now you realise why we don’t have any adult witnesses to our madness!!!)

Great fun was had by all.

Friday we celebrated the Feast of All Saints by attending morning Mass in O.L.G.A Cathedral.  Our younger children (P1,2&3) were bussed to and from the Cathedral whilst our older children walked. I cannot articulate how grateful I am to the large number of parent helpers who escorted our children and to our local community police who escorted us to and from the church. We could not do this without you.

The Mass was a truly beautiful experience, I was so happy to have our children back in the community of the parish. Our thanks to Fr. Millar for his continued support.

Events like this demand meticulous organisation which we, as a school, are delighted to provide. Our children’s  reverence and respect within the church was admirable. I am so proud of each and every one of our children. Well done everyone.

What a fabulous way to end a very successful week.

As always all comments about my blog are welcomed and any ideas for further improvement of any aspect of our school would be appreciated.

Mrs Shields

Atchoo!

Good afternoon, we have enjoyed another busy week in school and in nursery.

Our week began, as always, with our Monday morning assembly and our Missio collection. Our children are so generous with their collections it is a wonderful aspect of our assembly as our P7 passkeepers collect the money, Mrs Campbell plays some reflective music and our whole school sit in silence offering this moment to God. It is a truly spiritual experience and a lovely way to begin our week.

Tuesday of this week we welcomed a team of school nurses who administered the flu vaccination to all children whose parents had returned the form. All passed off without incident, thanks to Mrs Duffy for organising this in such a professional manner. Our school nurses were delighted with the hospitality offered to them and all commented on the manners (and bravery) of our children.

Our four Primary Seven pupils who are transferring to Taylor High School next session began their transition programme this Wednesday, they all behaved impeccably and enjoyed their first visit to their High School. This programme will continue for eight weeks. Wednesday also saw our joint garden gang get together and add to the beauty of the outside of our building. My thanks to Mrs Collins for her hard work and dedication to this group.

Our week ended on a fabulous note as Primary Seven got everyone In The Mood to dance, sing and reminisce of times gone by. World War II was the theme of this magical extravaganza and we were all transported to a time when food was rationed, children were evacuated and camaraderie was at an all time high. Primary Seven were brilliant, their dancing skills, singing and acting talents were being displayed in abundance. A HUGE thanks to P7 pupils to Mrs Loose, Miss Mullen, Miss Green, Mrs Campbell, Mrs McCoy and our classroom assistants who all worked so hard to make the assembly such a great success.

On a sad note, could I ask you to remember Mrs Susan Murphy (P5/6) and her family in your prayers. Mrs Murphy’s dad died this week. As a school community we extend our heartfelt sympathy and we will offer our Monday morning Rosary for Mrs Murphy and her family.

On a practical note, Mrs Campbell has taken over class teacher duties in P5/6 for the time being.

REMEMBER: Hallowe’en Parade and apple dookin’ will take place on Thursday afternoon. We look forward to welcoming our pupils and staff in their dressed up finery.

Meanwhile…………..our nursery explorers have been very, very busy.  Here’s our intrepid reporter (Mrs Murphy) and her column.

  • The Autumn walk before the October week was a huge success and a big thank you goes to all parents/carers who joined us, their help ensured that each child got the opportunity to go. The rangers from the Greenlink led the walk and the children discovered that deer live in the forest next to the school. The wardens showed them where the deer sleep at night and pointed out fox paths leading to foxes lairs. They planted seeds and berries and made collages with all different coloured shaped leaves and clay gargoyles that they stuck to the trees to make a scary trail.  The eco committee children from the school also joined us on the day.  A big thank you goes to Susan and her staff from the Greenlink for their continued support and we hope to enjoy more time with them in the near future. This week the children have been recalling the walk in their floorbooks and in the writing area in more detail.
  • Outside the children are still learning about nocturnal animals. They worked as a team to build a dark den for their furry nocturnal friends to visit. They linked different sized poles together to make a frame for the tarpaulin to go over and secured it with some tent pegs. They helped to make it even darker by putting some black bin bags over the fencing. They then put pictures of nocturnal animals in the den and on other parts of the fence. They also played games where they pretended to be nocturnal animals.
  • Over in the maths/science area the children have been playing a game where they have to place pictures of animals on the right board one board symbolises daytime and the other nightime. Again linking in with our current theme.
  • In the art area they have been making fabulous pictures using Autumn colours and rolling conkers in the paint to make abstract patterns. These turned out very colourful and look fabulous.
  • Autumn fruit tasting continued in the snack area.
  • On Wednesday the children got a chance to explore our new indoor climbing frame. They were all very excited about our new piece of equipment.
  • On Thursday the children got another surprise as Little Bill (our baby owl) was joined by the rest of his owl family. The children were so excited to see all the owl family cuddling together in the nest on the tree in the middle of the playroom. Bill’s mum and his siblings Sarah and Percy had swooped into the nursery overnight and were reunited with Bill.  Who knows what adventures they are going to get up to now!
  • Also Thursday started our 6 week Mini Movers programme. This is a coach led programme which promotes healthy eating and exercise. The coaches provide great opportunities for the children to improve on their hand to eye coordination skills through fun games.

  • The forthcoming week will see the start of the lending library. Each group has a specific day for this please check the board to see which day applies to your child.
  • The Halloween party is on Thursday please note sessions on this day will run as normal.

Congratulations!

Well done to Devine, our first winning House of the year.  This Thursday as a reward, the children in Devine are having a non uniform day.  This month’s points were as follows:

Douglas:  3900 Scanlan:  4320 Thompson:  4925 Devine:  5135 Gilmour:  4770 Carey:  4100

These points will carry forward to our yearly totals, but we start again this month for a new winning house!

From September to October

A warm welcome to the month of October, it is 2 weeks since my last blog due to September weekend break and following this there will be another interlude for our October mid-term break.

School life is busy, as always. We have been enjoying a whole range of classroom activities and a wide variety of scientific and dramatic goings on in our science and drama rooms.

Our young scientists are busy connecting through some electric learning whilst in drama our children are discovering the joys of stage direction and audience appreciation. Unfortunately I have had to make the decision to suspend our drama programme for the forseeable future and have asked Mrs McCoy to overtake class teacher duties in P4b whilst Miss Stack remains off school unwell. The class has been covered by a small number of supply staff but as time goes on I feel it imperative we provide stability for the class. My thanks to Mrs McCoy for being so flexible and accommodating, I know the class will really benefift from her excellent teaching. Mrs McCoy will remain in P4b until Miss Stack returns to school. In the meantime we wish Miss Stack well and look forward to welcoming her back to our school community – we miss her. My grateful thanks to Mrs Duffy who has planned and prepared all of the work for P4b since Miss Stack’s absence ensuring all aspects of learning and teaching have been overtaken in a professional and appropriate manner.

During the last week of September all of our children learned many new and interesting facts about looking after pets and keeping animals safe. A big thanks to SPCA personnel for delivering all of these insightful presentations. A huge thanks to our pupils who, once again, showed themselves to be excellent listeners, enthusiastic learners and polite, well mannered young people. SPCA personnel were delighted to be welcomed back to our school because of the warm, friendly welcome they receive from staff and because of the excellent learners within our pupils. Our children are a credit to you, their parents, to our school and to Lanarkshire.

This short week in school has been a busy one too with all classes preparing for our forthcoming Parent Evening. I am sure you will be delighted and extremely impressed by the displays of work in and around the school, I know I am. Our senior managers have all been involved in montioring all maths workbooks and jotters, where we have discussed the work with the children and staff and looked over all of the content to date. From Primary one through to Primary seven it is evident our children are very proud of their work and try exceptionally hard to produce their best work at all times. I am most impressed by the volume and variety of work around the mathematics programme. Our jotters only tell part of the story, being in and around the school every day you can see children throughout our building and outside measuring, finding shapes, looking for angles etc using all the items around the school. A real active maths programme which is most relevant to everyday life. Indeed it is not only the maths programme which brings learning to life, Primary one were seen around the school searching everywhere for ‘curly c’!!

Please remember to take time to complete our self evaluation questionnaire which will be given to you by class teachers on parent evening. Your views and opinions are a vital part of our continuous improvement.

REMEMBER: Parent Evening 3.20pm – 8.30pm Tuesday 8th October

This week, as  a staff we celebrated our Annual Teacher’s Mass in O.L.G.A Cathedral, my sincere thanks to the high number of staff who braved the wind and the rain to come along and  support this important event in our calendar.

Finally, a request. We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Father Millar’s mum – Cathie Millar.  I ask you all to remember Fr Millar, his dad and all the family in your prayers. Fr Millar’s mum was buried yesterday from St. Joseph’s Stepps. It was a beautiful service bravely celebrated by Fr Millar, one which I was privileged to attend. Flowers and a Mass card were sent on behalf of our school community.

Meanwhile…….The nursery are buzzing with excitement…….here’s the latest from Mrs Murphy, our intrepid reporter….

A short week at nursery but an action packed one. The children have been exploring all things relating to Autumn. They have been bringing in a variety of Autumn items such as different coloured and shaped leaves, branches, acorns, pine cones and conkers in and out of their shells. They have been playing Autumn maths  games, singing Autumn songs and making leaves in the art area. Please have a look at our Autumn display and particularly the fabulous Autumn sensory area.
In the writing area the children have been writing Autumn words on leaves and they made all the signs for the Farmer’s Shop which they have created in the home corner. A big thanks goes to Davy one of our Grandparents who cleverly converted an old piece of equipment into a market stall for the shop. The shop opened on Thursday selling all seasonal fruit and vegetables. The children painted special aprons for the shopkeepers to wear. They are enjoying taking turns at role-playing customers, farmers and shopkeepers.
In softplay this week the children heard the story of the Enormous Turnip which they then had a chance to re-enact. They worked hard as a team and they pulled and they pulled and they pulled to get the turnip out!
On Wednesday some of the children visited Motherwell library and brought back some Autumn stories to read.
On Thursday while out on a walk the children discovered a poor little baby owl (please note this is a pretend baby owl) who had fallen off his branch and had hurt his wing. The children brought him back to the nursery where Nurse Little our outdoor first aid specialist put a bandage on his broken wing. This sparked the children’s imagination and they discussed what we could do to help him. They decided to make him a nest in our big tree in the middle of the nursery which is turning all Autumnal. They fed him carrots from the shop and after a discussion about nocturnal birds and animals decided to put the lights off to make it darker. They then settled down to listen to the Owl Babies story. Afterwards they decided to call him Bill after one of the owls in the story. On Friday some of the children made nests from breakfast cereal with owls in them in the snack area, one child hid the owls under the branches to keep them safe. This activity will continue into next week as will Autumn and our Owl Babies topic.
Parent helpers are required for our Autumn walk please see the dates on the board in the cloakroom and if you can help please let a member of staff know.

As always, I invite comments on my blog……someday…..maybe…..someone will respond…..

Have a lovely October break. – Next Blog…Sunday 27th October

Commonwealth Excellence

What a fabulous week ending with a magnificent first assembly of the school year, and what an assembly it was. Primary 5 treated us to a fabulous display of knowledge, music, dance and drama. Congratulations to every child in Primary 5 who shared their talents with a most appreciative audience, it was fantastic. A huge thanks to Mrs McCarthy, Mrs McLaughlan, Mrs J Murphy, Mrs S Murphy, Mrs McCoy and all our support staff who worked so hard to script the assembly, source the music and provide the children with a wonderful platform for performance. I am always amazed at the high standard of scripting and performance in our assemblies, it is a wonderful way to ensure a deep, life-long learning opportunity for our children. Taking learning and teaching outside the classroom and away from textbooks and jotters allows all of our children a unique learning experience.

On Monday all of our children had their photograph taken by John Wilson, our school photographer, these will be with parents shortly. John will come back to school on 2nd October to take P1 class group photographs. Thanks in advance to John for providing thumbnail images of all of our P1 pupils which will allow us to update our beautiful This is Our Faith photographic display in our entrance corridor.

Tuesday evening our senior management team were delighted to be invited to Our Lady’s High School Awards Ceremony. It was a super evening and such a delight to see so many of our former pupils collect awards and accolades for their hard work and positive attitude to learning. As a managment team we were all very proud to have been a part of these young peoples lives and learning. As Mrs Mullen said: It is where they started their school career which has allowed them to become such successful learners and we all proudly nodded in agreement!!! Although I do think some credit has to go to the excellent teaching and learning in OLHS as well : )

Wednesday heralded our Hoola Hoola Hulabaloo. This was a most successful sponsored event with every child from nursery through to Primary 7 and all staff members  having opportunity to improve their fitness levels in a most unusual fashion. It was great fun. A HUGE thanks to Mrs McCoy and Mrs Loose who danced, sang, ran and hooped their way through the day taking only 15 minutes for lunch – poor souls must have been exhausted. Thank goodness we have such young, fit teachers. Thanks also to our parent helpers who so bravely not only assisted but took part too.

Thursday we all enjoyed participating in our dining hall Pirate Day. Congratulations to our Pirate Hat winner – Natalie Jackson and our 5 runners up: Roarke McShane, Maria Moss, Evan Foster, Charlie Foy and Maria McGhee.

This has been a really enjoyable busy week which whizzed past at an incredible speed.

There are some more changes to our personnel. I am delighted to appoint Mrs Katie Loose as Acting Principal Teacher, fulfilling the role vacated by Mrs Marie Clare Duffy who has joined our senior management team as Acting Depute Head Teacher. We welcome Katie to our managment team and look forward to her valuable input in the life of our school. Within the office Mrs Marie Seggie, who joined us in August has decided to take up post elsewhere, closer to home and with fewer hours. We look forward to a new member joining our office team later this week.

Within our nursery we extend our heartfelt sympathy to Ms Lesley Murray, our senior early years worker, on the sudden death of her mum. As a school community we will pray for Lesley and her family and will do all we can to support Lesley when she returns to work. In the interim we have welcomed Mrs Lorna McFadden to our nursery on a temporary basis.

Here’s Mrs Margaret Mary Murphy with all that’s been happening in the nursery….

Our Golden People are now displayed in the nursery for everyone to see. The children are very proud of them and described their efforts in making them in great detail in the floorbooks this week. To continue reinforcing the Golden Rules that the characters represent, some of  the children have designed Golden Helper badges in the creative area, these badges will give each child the responsibility to be their own group’s representative and with this goes special duties. Each child will get the opportunity to be the Golden Helper throughout the term.
Continuing on the theme of “All about Me” the children have been busy writing their names and describing their families and their pets in the writing area. This theme continued in the art area where they designed eggheads of themselves. These will be coming home next week.
On Wednesday everyone took part in our sponsored Hulahullabalou, it was a huge success and a fantastic time was had by all. The children listened well and followed the instructions given and enjoyed every minute of it. Have a Look at their efforts.
In the snack area the children made vegetable soup, they cut and chopped all the vegetables themselves and while doing this they discussed the names of each vegetable.
Outside our Eco programme continued please see our Eco board to see what is happening everyday outside.

Thanks to all who take the time to read my blog each week, feel free to leave a comment even if it’s just to re-assure me someone does actually read it!

All the latest news……….

This week, just for a wee change I am beginning my blog with our nursery highlights. Thanks again to Mrs Murphy for providing this weekly update:

This week the children have been busy designing the Golden People at group time. Each group has taken ownership of a specific Golden Character that represents one of the nursery Golden Rules. The children drew around the smallest member of their group and then decorated their characters with a variety of materials. They then chose the clothes that each character should wear. The characters are as follows.

Listening Lucy – Always has her listening ears on.

Walking Wendy – Always walks in the nursery.

Sharing Shay – A team player who always share with his friends.

Caring Cara – Cares for all the toys in the nursery

Tidy Tom – Is our very own superhero who overlooks the nursery at tidy up time.

The children worked together as a team to create these characters and next week we will be launching them to reinforce our Golden Rules. Please feel free to reinforce these rules at home.

Over in the writing area the children had the opportunity to write the names of the characters which will also be displayed on the wall. They have also been busy drawing themselves in great detail and providing lots of information about themselves.

In the art area the children painted self portraits which will be displayed in the cloakroom soon. They also were given a visual stimuli to design boats and rockets from junk as part of our Eco policy. Some of the children planned how they were going to make their creations and their fabulous efforts can be seen in the cloakroom.

In the maths area the children have been busy playing counting and matching number games which has been beneficial in the snack area as number quantities have been introduced as part of the snack routine. In the snack area they also got a chance to make cakes where they had to follow the instructions carefully. Each Wednesday is going to be baking day so that all children will get a chance to experience baking throughout the term.

Outside the children were busy carrying out our Eco Friendly jobs such as watering the plants and tidying up the garden.

A wee reminder. The Hi 5 for fruit courses are displayed on the information board. Please put your name next to the course of your choice.

Meanwhile in the school, here’s what’s been happening…….

We have enjoyed another busy week in school and in nursery. The beginning of our week was relatively quiet and then towards the end of the week we got busier and busier….

Tuesday morning we welcomed Mr Robert Dalziel, Quality Improvement Officer, who came out to meet with myself to talk through the progress of our Improvement Plan. Whilst in the school I offered Mr Dalziel the opportunity to tour the classes and look at the on-going excellent teaching and learning. Mr Dalziel was most impressed by the vibrant working atmosphere and the engagement of all children in their learning. he also commented most positively on the displays of children’s work in and around the classes.

Wednesday evening saw our first fundraisers meeting of this session. This was a most productive meeting – my thanks to all who came along representing both school and nursery. We began with the AGM nominating office bearers, they are as last year:

Chair :Mrs Anne Munro

Vice Chair: Mrs Kathleen Winton

Secretary: Mrs Pauline Findlay

Treasurer: Mrs Mary Frances Verrecchia

At the meeting we decided to branch out and host a Bingo Evening – this is scheduled for Tuesday 19th November 0 a date for your diary. Mr Jim Penman has kindly agreed to come out of retirement and host the evening – guaranteed a night of fun and cheesy jokes! Thanks to Jim for volunteering his services. Please support this forthcoming event.

Miss Lesley Phee – Principal Teacher updated the group of the progress made in playground resources. With funding from the Fundraisers £3000 we can now go ahead an order two permanent basketball hoops and back boards which will be cemented into our yard and a number of playground markings made from strong long lasting rubberised paint. Well done to Lesley for organising this (Lesley consulted the children as to what they would like) and thanks also to our generous fundraisers for providing the finance to allow us to do this.

Friday morning was extremely busy with all of our P6 pupils enjoying a day at Our Lady’s High School. This was their first introduction to secondary education and a great time was had by all. Friday morning also saw all of our P7 pupils and a number of parent helpers journey to Carfin Grotto for the Annual Carfin Mass. The journey back took a little longer than expected, indeed we have decided next year we will walk to Carfin and back, this should be quicker and good for our health. The Mass itself was lovely and very well attended. Many thanks to our parent helpers for giving so generously of their time to support this important event. Special thanks to Mrs Anne Munro who stepped in at the last minute to assist. Our school is so fortunate to have such committed and supportive parents. I am indebted to you all.

On Saturday morning a number of parents gave up their weekend long lie to come along to school and work on our grounds. Once again this is an amazing committment from our parents, A HUGE thanks to The Garden Gang. We have a beautiful school with large grounds which require much maintenance. Our school is a flagship school in North Lanarkshire – with the help of our wonderful parents we can keep it looking in top top condition.

This month our focus has been on ‘mind our manners’ we have been promoting excellent manners in our children and rewarding House Points for all children who are caught being well mannered. Suffice to say our P7s needed a calculator to add up the points, there are literally hundreds of them! Fantastic display of excellent manners from our children. Also great to see all of our staff participating in House Points Initiative.

Finally we ended our week on a very positive note. Due to the increase in our school and nursery roll I have been given permission to appoint an acting Depute Head Teacher to further complement our excellent management team. I am delighted to announce as from Monday 16th September Mrs Marie Clare Duffy will take up post as Acting DHT. Well done Mrs Duffy!

This also means that I am now in a position to elicit notes of interest from staff for an acting Principal Teacher (the post Mrs Duffy has vacated). Watch this space next week for more information on this.

Coming up next week:

Monday – MISSIO collection at Assembly

Monday – School Photographer

Wednesday – Hoola Hoola Hulabaloo Sponsored Event – If you’d like to come along and join the fun please give your name into the office.

Friday – Primary 5 Assembly

As always, should you have any comments, thoughts, ideas, opinions. Please share them with us. We are dedicated to continuous improvement and we truly value your input.

Leave a comment…….please!!!
