A New Beginning

A short week in school for our children but a very busy one.

Thursday of this week we welcomed His Lordship Bishop Devine to our school to celebrate Mass for Ascension Thursday. It was wonderful to be joined by so many parents and friends of our school. Primary 6 prepared the readings, bidding prayers and offertory. Well done Primary 6.

Friday we were all entertained by our fabulous Primary 3 pupils who sent us into orbit with their wonderful assembly. The theme for their assembly was Space. This was an excellent example of our children learning through discovery and building an impressive bank of knowledge whilst at the same time having great fun. The opportunity to express our children’s learning throughdance, song and drama really deepens the experience for all of our children and leads to a long term positive attitude to learning where every child has opportunity to participate fully and demonstrate their wide range of skills and talents. Well done to all of our P3 pupils and to Mrs Collins and Mrs Laird for their hard work. Everyone had a great time and we all learned something. Thank you Primary 3.

Throughout this week and last there has been many musical rehearsals in preparation for our forthcoming magical Musical Morning (Thursday 23rd May). We look forward to celebrating (and showing off) the wide range of musical talents and skills being fostered in our school.

Performers will include:

Primary 5 – Kodaly Music Training

P2 & P3 – Baby Choir

P6 – Flautists

Senior Pupils – Brass players

Senior Pupils – Strings Musicians

P6 – Clarinet performers

P4 P5, P6 & P7 – Choir

P4 – P7 – Solo Singers

Please feel free to come along and join us – free admission. All performers have received a letter of invite for their families. As always we welcome all of our parent forum and friends of our school. It promises to be a fabulous morning.

Meanwhile……in the nursery……Mrs Margaret Mary Murphy reports…….

The tadpoles are getting BIGGER, some of the children have been using magnifying glasses to watch them develop and grow. They have been feeding them boiled lettuce as instructed by the local  ranger. When the tadpoles transform into frogs they will be returned to their natural habitat which  is a pond in Strathaven where they came from. The children have been role playing frogs during physical activities and pretending to be seeds growing into sunflowers. The morning children got the opportunity to plant different types of sunflowers in their groups which  they will watch grow and the afternoon children will get the chance to do the same this week. (ran out of compost)

In the writing area the children have been looking at books about baby animals and they have been learning the names of some of them. Some children have written the names of these which can be seen proudly displayed in the writing area. Our nursery rhymes are proving to be very popular and the children are  getting the hang of the rhymes and producing many rhyming words of their own.

Outside the transformation of the garden continues with Mr McMahon who has been preparing our vegetable patch which should be ready for planting this week. Mr Mc Fadden has also kindly donated some old tyres which the children have started to create a mini farmyard and dinosaur garden with. This will continue this week. Also outside the children have had a chance to experiment with movement using different materials on the newly fixed guttering. Our outdoor area is starting to come alive.

The pre-school children have now started their transition activities and had the chance to explore numeracy and literacy games with Mrs Tominey and Ms Russell. These will continue throughout the coming weeks.
