Empty Classroom Day: Haiku inspired by the local environment

Today P3/2 & P6 met up for ‘Outdoor Classroom Day.’ We left our classrooms behind to head out on a walk around the local area to gather inspiration for writing poetry. Mrs Gordon led us round the back of the housing estate and we were amazed to find an unused railway track. Mrs G and P6 told P3/2 all about the areas mining history and explained about how that was the old railways tracks purpose.

We then walked down along the Auchter water and P6 told P3/2 all about when they went there to release the trout they had been taking care of last term.

Throughout the walk P6 supported the P3/2s by helping them take notes about what they could see, hear, feel and smell. We then returned to school and P3/2 then had the chance to be experts and tell the P6’s what they knew about Haiku poetry. Together, using their notes from the walk, all of the pupils came up with some fantastic Haikus.

Swift strong swans swimming
Brilliant bees buzzing by us
Glorious green grass

White swans on the lake
Jaggy nettles make a mess
Auchter water flows

Bees buzz in the sky
Dog barking in the long grass
White flowers look nice

The pupils produced some fantastic poetry as you can see!

Mrs Gordon and Miss Cruickshank are very impressed at how well the children worked together today. The P6 pupils were fantastic leaders and did their best to encourage and support the younger pupils. P3/2 worked really hard with their P6 buddies. They showed good listening and were able to share their ideas in order to produce some tremendous work!
