Investigating Plants

We have been learning about the parts of a plant. We can identify bulbs, roots, stems, leaves, buds, flowers, petals and pollen.

We investigated a Montbretia plant which has leaves coming from the bottom of the plant next to the bulb.

We looked at part of a Petunia plant and could find the stem, leaves, flowers and seed pods. We opened the flower to see the sticky nectar and the pollen. We know the bees like to find the nectar.

We opened one of the seed pods which had dried out and we found tiny little black seeds.

Next we looked at Sweet Peas. They had curly tendrils to let the plant climb high. The flowers had a lovely smell to attract insects. When the flower dies it turns into a pod which is covered in soft hairs.

DANGER   We know that you cannot eat the seeds in the pod because they are poisonous!

After that we looked at French Marigolds and saw all the different stages of the flower.

Buds                                                  Flower                                        Leaves

When we opened the dead flowers we found lots of long, thin seeds inside. We couldn’t believe that every petal turned into a seed!

We had a hunt around the garden looking for plants and tried to identify the different parts. We found Rosehips and know that the seeds inside  can make us itchy. They are known as ItchyCoos. We can’t eat them either.

Now we want to investigate what seeds need to grow. Alyisha thinks that they will need sunshine, soil and water to grow, everyone agrees.

We have harvested seeds from plants in Mrs Williams garden so that they are sustainable.

Clever Clogs group have planted Marigold seeds.

Genius Gems have planted Sweet Pea seeds

Super Stars are growing the Petunias.

We have put them in three places in the classroom. There are some in the cupboard to be kept dark, some on the windowsill to get lots of light and the last place is on the back shelf with the class lights.

We can’t wait to see what will happen next!
