Primary 1 News

This page will be updated termly to keep you up to date with what we are up to in the class.
Term 1:
Primary 1b have settled well in to school so far. We are making new friends and getting to know each  other.
In Literacy, we have been learning about Rhyme and Alliteration. We spend the first 4 weeks of Primary 1 developing our Phonological Awareness. This allows us to hear and differentiate sounds. We listen carefully for sounds at the start of a word or the end of a word. As we begin to differentiate sounds, we start to blend and segment words that have hear. For example j-a-m makes ‘jam’ or, to segment we break words in to sounds ‘mug’ is m-u-g. We need to make sure we always have our listening ears on as these are a key tool to helping us.
When we have finished our block of Phonological Awareness, we will move on to learning initial sounds. The first 6 sounds we will learn are : S  A  T  P  I  N.
We listen to a story every day and talk about what has happened in the story, building our comprehension skills. We try to retell the story and answer literal and inferential questions about the pictures based on what we can see and what we hear in the story.
We are working on our pencil grip, this is something that we can practise at home too! It is great to copy patterns of lines and make marks.

In Numeracy, we are focusing on numbers to 10. We count forwards and backwards every day. Each day we learn about a number. We look at numbers that come before and after and we try to recognise the number on a number line. It is important we practise our number formation. We are developing our 1-1 correspondence and learning that we can only count when we touch the item, this helps us keep track of everything.

We are learning about the class rules and the school rules and we try our best to follow these everyday. The class have created a beautiful class charter and created our own rules to follow.

Our topic this term is ‘People Who Help Us’ with a focus on Sustainability. We are looking at people who help look after our planet and how we can make small changes to help look after our planet.
