Literacy

Term 1 : Phonological Awareness

Environmental sounds
We went for a walk around the school on a listening walk. We listened carefully for the different noises we could hear in the playground and around the school. Sounds like children playing, wind blowing the trees, birds in the sky. We also managed to hear a plane and someone cutting the grass. This is helping us differentiate sounds.

Rhyme
Can you listen for 2 words that sound the same at the end? We learned rhymes in the class and tried to match the rhyming words. We clapped the rhythm of each rhyme and tried to create our own rhyming pairs.

Alliteration
This is a little bit more tricky. We are getting good at listening for rhyming words but finding 2 words that have the same sound at the start is a little bit more difficult. ‘I Spy’ is a great game to play at home to focus on the beginning sounds of words. Can you find 3 things that start with a ‘s’?

Syllables
This is when we break words down in to different sounds.
E.g Butterfly = but-ter-fly  – 3 syllables.

Blending and Segmenting
This focuses of CVC words. This is a 3 letter word that is spelt exactly the way it sounds phonetically.
Jam -j-a-m. Can you break a CVC word in to 3 sounds? Try these ones:
cat, hug, mop, pig, dog.
We need to be really concentrating to hear that middle sounds.

Blending sounds together to make words.
‘If I say ‘h-o-p’ , what word have I broken down?’
