Solo Talks

As part of our Australia topic we were given a homework challenge to research an Australian animal and deliver a solo talk about it to the rest of the class. We could either create a poster, Power Point presentation or book to use to show the class. Some of us were a bit nervous at first because this was our first solo talk to the whole class but we did really well! The talks were so interesting and we learned lots of interesting facts about the animals!

We each peer assessed someone else’s solo talk and the we self assessed them to see if we agreed. This was a really good way to get advice and ideas for when we do another solo talk.

Look at how confident we look in these photos:

Question Time with Mrs Thomas

Mrs Thomas spent time with us one day talking about her time living in Australia. She had lots of interesting stories to tell us and she brought along lots of photos to show us of her life in Australia. We got the chance to ask her questions about Australia and her life there. Some of us (including Miss Kerr) thought that Australia sounded amazing…until Mrs Thomas showed us a picture of a Huntsman spider she found in the bathroom one day!!!

Mrs Thomas even brought in her didgeridoo to let us have a try! This was such a great laugh but only a few people managed to get a sound from it! It must be the brass lessons that helped Emma get the best sound from it!

Thank you Mrs Thomas!!!

Australia

We really enjoyed our Australia topic last term! We especially liked learning about all the different animals that live there because they are so different to the animals we have in Scotland. We have also learned a lot about Captain James Cook who first claimed Australia for Britain over 200 years ago! We learned about the Aboriginal people and what happened to them when people from Britain and Europe moved to Australia. Did you know that the British Empire even sent prisoners to Australia because there wasn’t enough room in the British prisons?! It took them 9 months to sail from Britain to Australia!!

Apple Day

For Apple Day this year, we made Primary 5/6’s Amazing Apple Pie Puffs!

We washed, chopped, cored and peeled our apples and dipped them in melted butter. Then, we cut sheets of puff pastry into triangles and spread some apple jelly jam on top. Next, we sprinkled the pastry with brown sugar and cinnamon and we put our chopped apple onto the long side of the pastry. We rolled the pastry up and then it was time to cook them!

The apple pie puffs didn’t take long to cook- just 10 minutes! Finally, they were ready to try!!! Most of us really liked them and we even had enough left for some of the teachers to try… don’t think they lasted very long!
