Background Information

The Area

Kilmory Primary School is situated at the south end of the Island of Arran.  The catchment area encompasses Corriecravie to Levencorrach.

This is a rural area of the island with little public transport other than the service bus to and from the boat sailings in Brodick.  However, there is a community bus which can be used by residents of the area and groups outwith.  Facilities in the village include a hall with bunk house, social club and small community shop.   There are also local businesses Lagg Hotel, Velo Café, Lagg Distillery, Jennifer Earle Kilt Maker, Runach Arrain Yurt Glamping, Clachaig Farm Home Grown Vegetables and Kilmory workshop selling woodwork/pottery.

The School

The school roll in 2023/24 is 23 pupils plus 4 in the Early Years class.  The school has a capacity for 33 pupils and 10 places for 3 to 4 year olds in the early years class.

The present school was opened in 1974 and replaced a Victorian building.  It was extended in 2008.  It is a fully open plan building which is a very versatile design suited to a small school.  There is a kitchen in the school and meals are cooked at a hub kitchen in Shiskine and brought to Kilmory.

The school also benefits from having extensive school grounds, particularly for the size of the school.  The children have access to a tarred and small grass area with playground equipment to the front of the school as well as a school garden and playing field to the rear.  There is also a children’s play park adjacent to the school.
