Prelim Marker Feedback: N6 Higher English Prelim January 2019

Familiarise yourself with the Duffy Poems and practise analysis.

Try:

  • Reworking notes – transferring into new forms e.g. mind maps, table format, diagrams
  • Create a revision summary sheet of key ideas, techniques and aspects of comparison (use colour-coding)
  • Write mini-critical essays for each of the 6 poems
  • Do practice 10 mark comparison questions based around your choice of theme or technique on a variety of the poems
  • Pick out techniques and practise analysing them (see approaches used in Close Reading analysis).

Your Critical Essay work on ‘A View’ should be fresher but you should be using the above strategies in conjunction with the activities in the Holiday Homework document: N6 Holiday Homework and Revision

You can also be preparing for Close Reading by:

  • Annotating more articles
  • Picking out techniques from previous articles and practising the analytical approaches we have been using in class
  • Looking over the Close Reading booklet
  • Learning techniques and terminology
  • Taking an article and summarising main points and central argument
  • Translating key points from articles into your own words.

Critical Essay Revision:

  • Be reviewing your prose text ‘All Quiet’ or ‘The Veldt’ regularly – we will finish working on ‘The Sandman’ in class but it will be fresher for you.
  • Practice skeleton plans for essay questions
  • Do quick, 5 minute introductions
  • List 5 or 6 key quotations from memory
  • Do practice analysis of key quotation analysis – introduce point, integrate quotation then analyse in full
  • Write and submit additional timed essays done at home

There are practice papers we will be using in class but you can also get these in the Revision books.

Close Reading and Textual Analysis practice papers should be self-marked so you can see where you need to improve but you can submit additional mini-critical essays and example 10 mark questions to get teacher feedback.

Remember the SQA website also contains resources to support students when preparing for exams, as does BBC Bitesize.

Don’t forget to use all the resources on the Blog and ask if there is anything else you would like to see here or use.
