S3 Religion and Philosophy

What is the course?

The S3 Religion and Philosophy course will help pupils understand society and their place in it.  You will:

  • learn about, and from, religious beliefs, non-religious viewpoints, and personal experience
  • develop reasoning skills by focusing on abstract concepts and philosophical problems
  • gain insight into the ideas of others
  • develop skills such as analysing arguments and presenting ideas

How will I learn?

  • Whole class teaching, class discussions, individual and paired research, written responses to questions.
  • Individual learning conversations to help you identify strengths and weaknesses.
  • Class assessments as a important part of the process to measure how well you are processing through the year
  • You will be actively involved in developing your own skills, knowledge and understanding.
  • You will be expected to be inquisitive and resilient in your learning.

  • Moral Philosophy

As part of the BGE, your S3 personalisation will help build the knowledge and skills required for a successful senior phase. Completing the S3 Religion and Philosophy course covers many of the RME outcomes and supports progression to Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies and Philosophy SQA courses along with developing essential skills used in many other subjects.

What knowledge and skills are developed?

The course is intended to develop knowledge and  skills that will help you in the workplace or further learning when you leave school, such as:

  • knowledge and understanding of the impact, relevance and significance of religion
  • experience researching sources to present analysis and evaluation of views on a moral issue
  • explaining philosophical ideas and theories
  • the ability to analyse and evaluate arguments
  • ICT – simulating and analysing information
  • problem solving skills – developing solutions
  • report writing skills – in an engineering context

How will I be assessed?

Your progress on the course will be assessed through a combination of continuous and final assessment. There are opportunities for N4 and N5 unit completion throughout the course.

What might this help me with when I leave school?

Completing this course will help build the skills and knowledge for many social subjects related courses and careers. Journalism, politics, law, teaching, policing, and management are all areas where a background understanding of Religion and Philosophy would be useful.
