S3 Practical Woodwork

What is the course?

The S3 Practical woodwork  course allows you to develop your practical workshop skills. You will:

  • Manufacture predesigned projects.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of different types of wood and how we can manufacture it.
  • Learners also gain an understanding of the sustainability and how we can protect our planet.
  • Allow development in Design and Manufacture

How will I learn?

The learning takes the format of whole class direct teaching opportunities followed by activity based learning on practical tasks.

Throughout the year you will produce products in the workshop as well as producing information sheets on different materials and tools.

You will be actively involved in developing your own skills, knowledge and understanding by investigating a range of different products.

What topics will I learn?

  • Flat frame Joints
  • Carcase Joints
  • Machining and Turning

These will be covered under the following projects

  • Chalkboard
  • Stool
  • And various other projects

As part of the BGE, your S3 personalisation will help build the knowledge and skills required for a successful senior phase. Completing the S3  Practical Woodwork course covers many of the technologies outcomes and supports progression to National Design & Manufacture and Practical Woodwork along with developing  essential skills used in many other subjects.

What skills are developed?

The course is intended to develop skills that will help you in the workplace or further learning when you leave school.   Practical woodwork develops skills in:

  • Accurately measuring and marking out work to a tolerance.
  • develop skills when working with wood.
  • using a range of tools, equipment and materials safely and correctly
  • reading and interpreting drawings and diagrams
  • knowledge and understanding of the properties and uses of a range of materials

How will I be assessed?

Your progress on the course will be assessed through a combination of continuous and final assessment. There are opportunities for N4 unit completion throughout the course.

What might this help me with when I leave school?

Completing this course will help build the skills and knowledge for many design and construction related courses (college and university) and careers (modern apprenticeships and graduate apprenticeships).
