S3 Music

What is the course?

The S3 Music course is a performance based course that give you the confidence to play, knowledge to create and understanding to appreciated. You will:

  • Create original music that demonstrates individual skills
  • Perform/Present on two instruments or one instrument and voice and develop the skills necessary to play a range of styles of music
  • Evaluate your skills development in creating and presenting, then identify goals and appropriate strategies to achieve them
  • Appreciate music’s melody, harmony, rhythm, structure and timbre by recognising appropriate concepts

How will I learn?

Personalised pace and challenge is at the heart of the music curriculum.  Whole class teaching of terminology, concepts and their meanings will lead to individualised practical tasks depending on your current skill level, instrument choice and co-established SMART targets.

You will be expected to adopt an independent approach to the topics, demonstrating a desire to develop your instrumental skills through self–reflection and target setting.

What topics will I learn?

  • Music literacy
  • Scottish Music (past, present and future)
  • World Music (socio-cultural impact on music making)
  • Music of your time (music from the day you were born to now)
  • Classics (from Mozart to Queen)

As part of the BGE, your S3 personalisation will help build the knowledge and skills required for a successful senior phase. Successful completing the S3 Music course will give you the evidence required to be awarded a National 4 qualification.  This will provide an individual pathway for each learner wishing to continue their music studies in the senior phase in National Music courses (National 4-Advanced Higher).

What skills are developed?

  • Improved memory and abstract reasoning
  • Leadership and confidence
  • Health and wellbeing (stress alleviation)
  • Improves patience and self discipline
  • Make you more creative (essential in all work places)
  • Active learning is better for brain development

How will I be assessed?

Your progress on the course will be assessed through a combination of continuous and final assessment.  There are opportunities for N4 unit completion throughout the course.

What might this help me with when I leave school?

There’s a career for you in Scotland’s thriving creative industry, whatever your interests, covering architecture, TV, radio, film, fashion and textiles, cultural heritage, design, journalism, publishing, music, visual arts, gaming and more.
