S3 Engineering and Graphics

What is the course?

The Engineering and Graphics course is a knowledge and skills based course where you will learn through research, practical tasks, computer simulation and computer modelling.

You will:

  • Learn what engineering is and the impact it has on our lives, on the planet and to our economy.
  • Learn about different types of engineering and how engineers solve problems.
  • Understand the relationship between engineering, science and maths.
  • Apply knowledge to create, test and evaluate solutions to problems.
  • Learn technical vocabulary so you can communicate engineering concepts clearly.
  • Learn about the relationship between graphics and engineering, and how graphics are used in our wider society.
  • Apply skills in 3D computer modelling to create a range of simulated objects and engineering solutions.
  • Understand and read technical drawings, and then apply this knowledge to create your own.
  • Apply design elements and principles to effectively communicate ideas through graphics.

How will I learn?

You will learn both individually and in groups.

You will learn through whole class teaching, teacher lead demonstrations, research and practical activities.

You will be expected to adopt an investigatory approach to the topics, demonstrating a desire to ‘find out more’, and develop your own knowledge and understanding by investigating a range of real-life and relevant engineering systems, problems and solutions.

You will also be expected take responsibility for your own learning, showing willingness to repeat and practice skills, show creativity and be willing to solve problems yourself.

What topics will I learn?

  • Engineering roles and impacts
  • Energy production and conservation
  • The systems approach
  • 3D computer modelling
  • Orthographic production drawings
  • Digital control
  • Programmable Control
  • Graphs and charts
  • Desktop publishing
  • Structures
  • Pneumatics

What skills will I develop?

The course is intended to develop skills that will help you in the workplace or further learning when you leave school.  Engineering and graphics learners develop skills in:

  • numeracy – calculations, estimating, contextualising
  • literacy – researching and reporting in an engineering context
  • communication – written, oral and through graphics
  • practical investigative – apply engineering practically
  • ICT – modelling, simulating and analysing information
  • problem solving skills – developing solutions
  • Creativity – in creating solutions and designs

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by continuous assessment and class tests.

How will this help me when I leave school?

Completing this course will help build the core skills and knowledge for progression into N4/5 Engineering Science and Graphic Communication courses. This could then lead on to many engineering, construction, architecture, marketing, graphic design and web design related courses (college and university) and careers (modern apprenticeships and graduate apprenticeships).
