S3 Business

What is this course?

Business allows students to look at the world of business from the eyes of an Entrepreneur.

Business plays an important role in society, as it creates wealth, prosperity, jobs, and choices for consumers.  It is therefore essential to have effective businesses and business managers to sustain this role.

This course helps pupils understand the dynamic, changing and competitive environment of industry and commerce, and the environments that organisations operate in.  It develops skills in communicating and presenting business-related information and as well as an awareness of straightforward internal and external influences on business activity.  This course will provide pupils with an up to date and relevant insight into the business world and equip them with the skills required for life and work.

How will I learn?

The course will include practical, theoretical and ICT-based learning, whole class learning; group work and focusing on real-life business context.

The learning takes the format of whole class direct teaching opportunities and will include practical, theoretical and ICT-based learning.

You will be actively involved in developing your own skills, knowledge and understanding by investigating a range of real-life and relevant problems and solutions

What topics will I learn?

  • Types of Business? – including business ownership, business sectors and pressures affecting business
  • Branding of Products – including promotion, stakeholders and brands
  • Research and Development  – meeting needs of a constantly changing society
  • Business Success including business costs and finance, basic financial documents and the completion of the business plan
  • Technology – the use and impact of technology in the business world of today

As part of the BGE, your S3 personalisation will help build the knowledge and skills required for a successful senior phase. Completing the S3 Business course will enhance your IT skills and the course covers many of the technologies outcomes and supports progression to National and Higher Business Management along with developing essential skills used in many other subjects.

What skills are developed?

The course is intended to develop skills that will help you in the workplace or further learning when you leave school.  Business learners develop skills in:

  • literacy – report writing
  • numeracy
  • problem solving skills
  • team work
  • enterprise and employability
  • communication
  • ICT

How will I be assessed?

Your progress on the course will be assessed through a combination of continuous and final assessment.  This will provide the opportunity to gain a N4 units/course certificate at the end of S3.

What might this help me with when I leave school?

Completing this course will help build the skills and knowledge for many business related courses such as sales and marketing, events management, accountancy, human resources (at college and university) and jobs and careers including foundation, modern and graduate apprenticeships.
