S3 Administration and IT

What is the course?

Administration and IT allows pupils to understand how ICT is used to help organise and support activities in a work place.  Pupils will be equipped with the knowledge and skills of how to efficiently and effectively use the different functions of a range of computer software packages.  These skills will be beneficial for our young people going out into the world of work.

Pupils will be given opportunities to use a range of ICT and work through the process of organising small-scale events e.g. a business trip.

The course aims to enable pupils to:

  • develop a basic understanding of administration in the workplace and key legislation affecting employees
  • develop an appreciation of good customer care
  • develop IT skills and use them to perform straightforward administrative tasks
  • acquire organisational skills in the context of organising and supporting small-scale events

How will I learn?

The learning takes the format of whole class direct teaching opportunities followed by activity based learning on practical tasks.  You will be expected to use the software packages to fulfil tasks relevant to the world of work.  You will be actively involved in developing your own skills, knowledge and understanding by creating documents to meet specifications.

What topics will I learn?

  • Use of Technology – using word processing, spreadsheet, database and desk top publishing software etc
  • Use of the Internet for Communication and Investigation – using the internet, email, instant messaging, E-diary,  social media and other forms of communication
  • Organise, process and communicate information using ICT – organisation and preparation of documents and presentations suitable for events

As part of the BGE, your S3 personalisation will help build the knowledge and skills required for a successful senior phase.  Completing the S3 Administration course will enhance your IT skills and the course covers many of the technologies outcomes and supports progression to National and Higher Administration and IT along with developing essential skills used in many other subjects.

What skills are developed?

The course is intended to develop skills that will help you in the workplace or further learning when you leave school.  Administration and IT learners develop skills in:

  • literacy – creating and proof reading documents
  • ICT – essential for the ever changing technological world of today
  • numeracy
  • problem solving skills
  • team work

How will I be assessed?

Your progress on the course will be assessed through a combination of continuous and final assessment.  This will provide the opportunity to gain a N4 units/course certificate at the end of S3.

What might this help me with when I leave school?

Digital Technology is found in all areas of business, finance, creative industries, marketing, sport, construction etc.  Everywhere there are computers there is a need for people to support them, work with them, develop them and apply the technology in new and innovative ways – could this be you?
