What is Mathematics?

Mathematics is the studying of numbers, shape and patterns. Mathematics is all around us; it is in everything that we do! It can be described as the building blocks for everything in our learning, life and work.

Mathematicians are logical, creative thinkers who identify and use patterns to formulate new ideas, validate or falsify conjectures and use mathematical reasoning to make valid predictions based of information gathered.

What skills are developed?

  • independent working—taking charge of your own learning

Mathematics is challenging, rewarding, logical and creative and the pathways which open as a result of studying mathematics are unlimited.

The list of pathways are huge but include the following sectors:

Business and Finance; ICT & Digital Media; Engineering; Construction; Education (teacher/lecturer/further research including PhD); Government; Agriculture; Sport and Leisure; Research; Travel & Tourism; Food and Drink…….and the list is endless!
