Film and Media – NPA

What is this Course?

This National Progression Award (NPA) introduces learners to techniques that are important specifically in the film industry and media sector. It encourages a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the key aspects in film, media, and social media.

This course is best for those who want to try a brand new subject alongside their other N5 courses.

What will I learn?

Each of the Units has a different focus:

  1. Media: An Introduction to Film and the Film Industry

    This unit provides an introduction to film and the film industry. You will be introduced to technical codes and narrative conventions in film which will be achieved through viewing films or film extracts from a range of film genres. You will also have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the film industry and the commercial factors that affect film production.

  2. Media: An Introduction to the Media Industry

    This unit provides an introduction to the media industry. You will be exploring your personal use of media as well as how media is used by others. This will build a knowledge and understanding of the diverse nature of media and different target audiences. You will also develop your appreciation of media sectors, media platforms and media products.

  3. Social Media Literacy

    This unit covers practical skills in the use of social media and provides a theoretical basis to its historical development, unique characteristics, current uses, and the opportunity and threats it poses. You will develop your knowledge of the different types of social media and be given practical experience of using social media for personal and educational purposes.

  4. Creative Project

    The focus of this unit is primarily on practical activity carried out in a creative context. You will work as part of a team throughout the planning and implementation of a creative project to a given brief. You will contribute to and participate in all stages of implementation of a creative project and evaluate the completed project and your contribution to it.

Outcome assessment across the units will be either written answers, illustrated folio, or an audio-visual presentation. The Creative Project is assessed through a collaborative group project.
