What is the course?
The S3 French course is a fun, active and challenging course that will enable you to:
- write and speak with increasing accuracy in French
- write and speak at greater length and with more confidence in French
- read and understand longer and more complex written texts in French
- listen to and understand longer and more complex spoken texts in French
- develop your ICT skills
- better understand the value and importance of being able to speak another language in today’s world
How will I learn?
Working at level 4, and towards gaining the full National 4 award, you will learn through whole class teaching opportunities followed by a range of different fun, practical and hands-on activities, done in groups, pairs or individually, to help you to develop your literacy and communication skills in French.
You will be actively engaged in a wide variety of projects and activities in class . You will also work collaboratively with Visit Scotland creating an advert to promote Scotland to French visitors that will be posted on one of Visit Scotland’s social media platforms.
You will have the opportunity to use ICT to create and edit a video and to research a European city of your choice.

- Tourism: promoting Scotland as a tourist destination to the French
- Travel: describing a European city of my choice
- Positive and negative relationships with family and friends
- TV and film
As part of the BGE, your S3 personalisation will help you build the knowledge and skills required to progress and succeed in the senior phase. Completing the S3 French course will enable you to progress onto Nationals in French courses (National 5-Advanced Higher). You could also choose to pick up German in the senior phase and learn a different language, such as Spanish, Mandarin or Italian, via YASS modules in S6.
What skills are developed?
The course is intended to develop skills that will help you in the workplace or further learning including:
- Communication skills
- Interpersonal skills
- ICT skills
- Problem solving skills
In fact, being able to speak another language is an essential skill in today’s global society.
How will I be assessed?
You will have the opportunity to complete N4 French in S3 and you will sit N4 unit assessments at various points in the year.
What might this help me with when I leave school?
Being able to speak another language gives you an edge over other candidates when applying for jobs or college and university courses. Language skills enable you to travel, work and study all over the world!
