Wraparound spelling

The children have chosen the level of challenge they want to set themselves  this term and we have worked as a whole 2nd level area to plan for a varied set of activities for the children to meet their needs.  Some children now visit one of the other classrooms in the area to complete the activities with one of the other teachers.KaHa4.JPG

Numeracy

This term we have been revisiting place value and decimal numbers.

IMG_1799[1].JPG

This term we have been focussing on multiplying by 10, 100, 1000.  We have been revisiting the times tables to help us with multiplying bigger numbers and have looked at different ways of recording this, using the grid method and the column method.  We also revisited division and discussed the link between multiplication and division.

IMG_1124[1].JPG        IMG_1277[1].JPG

We have also looked briefly at algebraic equations.  The children have applied what they know about the 4 number operations to help them with this.

We have been looking at the relationships between numbers, identifying and continuing number sequences and the patterns of number.  Ask your child about the Fibonacci sequence.

End of year event and fundraising

We have spent a lot of time planning possible events for our end of year event.  This has involved members of our class helping to compose emails to enquire about costings, special packages available to us and availability of dates.  Some children also volunteered to phone some of the businesses.  Mrs Thorley is reviewing the work we have done on this.  We have also started to think of fundraising ideas and the risk assessments and health and hygiene aspects we need to consider for some of these ideas.  Listen out for an update coming soon!

Micro:bit training

We were lucky to have a colleague from the Moray Digital Learning team come in to provide the children with a training session on how to use the micro:bits.  The children had great fun coding these to do different things.

Basketball

Two weeks ago we had a team of 5 children go to the academy to participate in a fun basketball event which was co-ordinated by active schools.  The team were great ambassadors for Pilmuir and had lots of fun with teams of P7 children from the other ASG schools.

Orienteering

We had a team of P6 and P7 children attend an orienteering event at Grant Park on Friday. This was organised by some S6 Forres academy pupils with the support of Active Schools.  The teams enjoyed themselves and did well.

Rotary Quiz

A  small team of P7s represented the school this week at the Rotary Club quiz.   Well done to all involved for representing the school.

Transition academy

The  children had 2 very successful visits to the academy and have  spoken positively about these on return to school . The event this week  had a focus on getting to know staff and children from other schools by rotating round team building activities. We also had a visit last week from a member of staff who was able to answer their questions and put their minds at ease.

Culbin Cycle

The children enjoyed their trip to Culbin woods with Outfit Moray.  They had great fun and and were very excited to be given this opportunity.

Badminton

Angela Bell has continued to visit the school and work with the 2nd level classes to further develop their badminton skills.  The children are making great progress, improving their skills and enjoying these sessions.

We look forward to seeing you all back in term 4. Enjoy your holidays.

Term 3

What a fantastic term we have had in Primary 6.  We have had a term full of fun and new learning opportunities

Literacy

In Literacy this term we have been focusing on the genre of adventure.  Our class novel ‘Journey to the River Sea’ supports this and has engaged the children beautifully in the exciting adventures of its main character Mia.  Using Talk for Writing methods the children have been innovating on the short story ‘Safia and the Captain’ by Pie Corbett creating their own characters with a particular focus on appropriate paragraphing and developing adventure through the use exciting verbs and adverbs.

Accelerated Reader has been ongoing as an independent activity with most children working hard to read books and then complete a test.

Numeracy

During this term primary 6 have been working on money and fractions.  Primary 6 have enjoyed some shop role play and are now confident in the four operations with money.  Primary 6 have also been working hard on fractions and are becoming more confident in calculating fractions of amounts, comparing and ordering fractions and equivalent fractions. Throughout the term we have also been revising our times table knowledge through active maths activities and games.

Health and Wellbeing

In PE primary 6 always work extremely hard.  They have been working on circuits once a week and this has been extremely popular.  They have also been working on Badminton and now the children strive to hold a successful rally with their peers.  Finally, we have been playing team games which the children particularly love, this has helped us to work on communicating with peers successfully and supporting each other.  It’s been fantastic to be a part of!

Primary 6 have had a wonderful term, full of fantastic experience, We can’t wait to see what next term holds!

P2/3 Term 3 Update

P2/3 have had a great start to 2023! We have been busy learning both in class and outside in Adventure Island – although we are hoping that we’ve seen the last of the snow in Adventure Island for this year!

Maths & Numeracy

We started Term 3 by looking at and making continuing patterns. The children could recognise patterns made with objects and shapes and applied this knowledge to number patterns too.

Our pizza shop in the role play area helped us to learn more about fractions and we have explored how to find a half, a quarter and a third.

Learning about fractions really helped as we moved on to ‘time’. Understanding what a half and quarter is made reading the time on a 12-hour clock a little easier. The children have learned about the minute and hour hands and are confident in reading o’clock and half past times. We have also looked at quarter past and too, and even telling the time to 5 minutes.

Learning about clockwise and anticlockwise has led us in to our position and direction block of learning and it has been fun to follow and give directions to our friends using mathematical vocabulary. We are now having fun programming the BeeBots to follow our route!

Literacy

P2/3 continue to read everyday – in groups and as a whole class. The children really enjoy stories and this term we have chosen to read a chapter book to end each day. Mr Fox by Roald Dahl has been a big hit!

The children have continued to learn through ‘Talk for Writing’ and this term have concentrated on journey stories. By following the original story structure, the children have become confident in changing the main characters and settings through the innovation stage. They have been learning to use time connectives and sentence openers to make their writing more exciting.

Health & Wellbeing

Our main focus in PE has been to improve our fitness and exercise techiniques through circuit training. All the children increased their number of repetitions over the term, but the best progress has been made in  their technique – we have some fanatastic demonstrators of squats, sit-ups and even burpees!

Other Curricular Areas

The first half of the term we focused on all things ‘Scotland’. The children learned about the Scots language through stories, poetry and songs. They also found out about the Scottish Colourist Painter, Samual Peploe and created paintings in his style.

Over the second part of the term, we have learned about the weather and the water cycle. Miss Ritchie has joined our class again and has delivered some exciting science lessons!

Sharon from the Royal Voluntary Society has also visited for the final time this year and this time taught us all about different types of bees and how they help us. We planted sunflowers to encourage the bees to visit, along with courgettes and peas.

Term 3

We have had such a busy term with Play Projects, World Book Day, Parents’ Nights and our Scotland Assembly. It was great nice to see so many parents this term and share our learning with you.

Literacy

We have focused a great deal on Talk4Writing . The class has enjoyed learning stories, telling stories, drawing story maps and writing stories. What great imaginations everyone has! Our latest story, “Kasim and the Hungry Dragon” has inspired a great deal of discussion and led to lots of fabulous ideas. Everyone continues to read with their group and complete Higher Order reading activities. It is great to see the progress that children are making.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have covered a range of topics this term. These include measure, time and information handling. The children can practise all of these skills at home and demonstrate  their practical skills.  Multiplication and addition facts continue to be reinforced, as this has helped many children to develop greater confidence, and speed up their calculations.

Health

In PE we have been focused on large ball skills. Everyone has been practising throwing, catching, moving and finding space. We then worked on team skills and how to play games. It is so important to work together to try and score lots of points.

We have also spent the last two weeks participating in  “The Big Wheel and Walk”. This encourages pupils to think of the impact of travel, and to find safe healthy ways to travel where possible. Bikeability has also helped everyone to develop greater confidence in their cycling skills.

Reporting and Supporting Learners

This term  a new SWAY went out for each child focusing on a week of their learning. I’m sure that the children have enjoyed sharing these with you. You can also follow our learning through our Play Projects. Every month we publish a SWAY showing our learning. Links are in the Google Classroom or here.

Leaning can be supported by families  through our weekly Google Classroom activities and through Sumdog. Both of which can be accessed on a range of devices at home.

Thank you again for your support. We are now looking forward to warmer days and even more learning!

Term 3 in Primary 1

We enjoyed the 2 Book Days we had in school: World Book Day and Pilmuir Primary Book Day.  In Primary 1 we created our own stories called “My Naughty Dog “ and to help us in the planning stage we took it in turns to have photos taken with the naughty pet.

On  Pilmuir Primary Book Day we had a book swap and every child went home with at least one book to keep and enjoy.

A special thanks must go to Wastebusters who kindly donated some books to us for the swap, which allowed more choice for the children.

Left over books were donated back to Wastebusters.  It complemented our Eco Schools’ work,  to reuse and to recycle.

Here are some photos of the P1s reading the books they chose.
