All of the boys and girls in P1/2 have been super busy so far this school year. Come and see what we’ve been doing…
In Literacy the P1’s have been working really hard to learn their sounds, practise letter formation and brain storm words that begin with the sound they are learning. Some of the children have been able to recognise the sounds when they appear in the middle and at the end of a word too – great job P1’s, this is a tricky task! We are continuing to work on a new sound three days a week and will use a Friday to revise all previous sounds learned through a variety of active tasks.
P2’s have been revising previous spelling patterns, as well as practising their letter formation and continuing their reading journey from where they finished off before the holidays. P2’s have been reading to our class reading buddies daily, and earlier this week became Tricky Word Detectives – wow, what a job to have. They really enjoyed using finger lights to help them find sight words in their reading books.
During Numeracy sessions P1’s have been becoming familiar with using the Tens Frame resource and are becoming quicker in their ability to subatise. We have been practising saying the number before and after, and also using the language one more and one less. The children have been working hard to order their Tens Frames as quick as they can, as well as showing me the number which matches each card.
P2’s have been working on the place value of numbers to 100 and above, looking at number order, missing number sequences and identifying odd and even numbers. They have been adding and subtracting 1 and 2 from a variety of 2 and 3 digit numbers. As a group they have been taking turns to pose number questions for each other.
As a class we have been learning about pattern. This week everyone has created their very own pattern using their own criteria. These have taken pride of place on our Numeracy working wall in class, I think you will all be very impressed when you see these. We have also been learning lots of number songs to help us count up in ones, twos and tens and we have even done some counting down too!
In Health and Wellbeing we have been thinking about what makes a good class and a good friend. We have been relating our learning to our school values and the wellbeing indicators (SHANARRI), as well as beginning to think about the UNCRC and what having these rights means for children.
P.E sessions have been very energetic! P1/2 are excellent at listening to instructions in the gym hall and have all shown that they are able to travel around the space safely. As well as taking part in games, we have been developing our ball skills. At the moment we are focussing on passing and receiving skills, and will be learning how to dribble, throw and catch a ball with increasing accuracy.
The children are thoroughly enjoying our going on a bear hunt theme. We have started learning about bears, including their life cycle and today we made up our very own sensory song using a variety of instruments to accompany the We’re Going on a Bear Hunt story.
This is just a small snippet of things going on in P1/2 at the moment. The children have shown a very enthusiastic and positive approach to their learning and I am so very proud of each and every one of them for settling in so well. Good job boys and girls!
