  • To reinforce and confirm existing skills.
  • To reinforce good study habits.
  • To encourage responsibility for learning among pupils.
  • To strengthen the partnership between home and school.

 1. Frequency of homework

Homework is given termly in both subjects.  These are assessed pieces which are retained as evidence of pupil progress.

At least 1 week is given to complete each task.

S3  classes:

A minimum of 2 pieces per term will be given but this may increase according to topics and skills covered during that term.

At least 1 week will be given for completion.

These tasks will focus on skills, source questions and research in preparation for the senior phase.

National 4/5  classes:

Homework will be given at least fortnightly.

At least 1 week will be given for completion.

These tasks will focus on practice exam questions and AVU research.

Pupils are expected to carry out weekly self-study to help prepare for the final exam.  This could include reviewing of classroom notes, further research, or creation of revision notes, completing practice exam questions.

 Higher classes:

Fortnightly essays will be given alongside source questions.

Pupils will also be expected to complete 1 hour self-study per week.

If pupils are absent at the time homework is allocated they will be given extra time to complete the task at the discretion of the class teacher.

2. Recording of homework

All marks will be recorded by staff and assessed pieces recorded within the department.

This information will be used to facilitate accurate recommendations for pupil progress and identify areas for development of pupil learning.

Pupils will be given written feedback on their homework and where appropriate the level/grade it falls into.

3. Communication of homework

Homework tasks will be displayed within classrooms.

Homework tasks will be displayed on the department blog or class glow site.

Pupils are expected to record the homework task and due date in their diaries or phones at the time of giving.

4. Help with homework

Pupils are welcome to come and see any member of staff within the department during lunchtimes from 1.10pm to ask questions/seek help with homework.

This must be done before the due date of the homework piece.

Where appropriate homework sheets may be uploaded to the department’s website or classes’ glow group.

5. Non completion of homework

  • If homework is not completed the pupil will receive a demerit on SEEMIS on the day the homework is due.
  • Homework is expected to be handed into the subject PT in the next school day during registration or lesson.
  • If the homework is still not done the PT will discuss with the pupil and where extenuating circumstances exist agree a date for it to be handed in, alternatively the outstanding homework should be handed in the following day. The office will be notified to send a text message home.
  • If the homework is still not handed in the PT will meet with pupil and a lunchtime detention will be given and recorded on the department EBH spreadsheet.
