During the first week of the summer me and my parents went to stay with my Mums friend in London. The trip was very fun but the highlight was seeing The Great Gatsby Musical at the London Coliseum. The show was amazing, but I haven’t read the book yet so maybe I’ll think different after that. Anyway, here’s my review!
We had almost the entire cast except Jamie Muscato as Jay Gatsby but the swing (Samuel John-Humphrey’s) we had in his place was very talented and I loved his voice! We also had Frances Mayli McCaan as Daisy Buchanan and she was amazing and one of the best parts of the show. I loved the rest of the cast as well, Corbin Bleu was actually suprisingly good as Nick Carraway. I didn’t expect him to be bad or anything but my expectations are always a bit higher when shows cast celebrities and he definitely suppassed my expectations! I was also very surprised to learn that Amber Davis was playing Jordan Baker since she originated the role of Campbell in Bring It On The Musical and even won Love Island! She was amazing Jordan and I could definitely see she understood the character and her version of New Money was such a bop! Wolfsheim and George and Myrtle Wilson were surprisingly one of my favourite parts of the show and especially George was amazing!
The show itself in my opinion was very strong! The music was fun and exciting but sad and heartbreaking when it needed to be. My favourite songs were Second-hand Suit, For Better or Worse, Only Tea and Green Light! I especially love For Better Or Worse just because of how beautiful and sad it is for Daisy’s character.
The ending song (Roaring On Reprise) was definitely the best scene. It’s a reprise of the first song sang by Nick Carraway and the ensemble and while the original version is nice and a good intro the show but the reprise, especially the part with Gatsby looking out at the green light, is haunting and it makes you feel bad for Nick despite the fact if at any point in the show he spoke up and said “This is a bad idea” the show would’ve ended much faster!
Overall I recommend this show! I’m sad that the west end run was so short but i’m pretty sure you can find some bootlegs on youtube or other social media but if you can’t find a bootleg I recommend the cast album!
