Today in energy we started by watching a video about the research station called Halley in Antarctica. We then went to the computers and finished off our investigations about renewable energy, we also did a talk about our investigations to the rest of the class. We went to technology, we bent copper pipes to 180 degrees. In the last period we started our assignment about energy conversion processes.
Today in energy we watched a video about Antarctica and we took notes on it so we could come up for questions we will ask Carolyn later on in energy when she goes down to Halley. We were doing research on renewables, my group got wave and tidal energy. We went down to the workshop and we were finishing our copper pipe work.
The Last week of term we focused on Energy Conversion Experiments. There were 3 experiments, which were Wind Energy, Electrical into light, rotational and electrical, and Solar PhotoVoltaic (PV) Photos will be inserted in the coming weeks.
Today in energy we started off by looking at the different boilers we might have in our homes and then drawing the different boilers combi boiler and a gas boiler and we also drew a diagram of an electricity meter
Then after that we looked over some employability skills, mainly good time keeping, and did a quiz to see how good we all were at time-keeping , most of us scored 75-100 meaning we were excellent time keepers
Afterwards we went to the workshops and learned how to drill holes and how to screw and unscrew things with a drill and also learned that the twisty bit on a drill is called a chuck, you twist the chuck so you can put in the different drill sizes.
In energy today we had an assessment first. This assessment is one of 25 assessments throughout the year. The assessment was about different types of energy power plants e.g. nuclear.
After we had finished majority of the first assessment we then went down to the workshop. In the workshop we started another assessment by bending copper poles to help us understand how to bend poles for when we make our solar hot water system. We then finished off our day in energy by writing our journals.
This is a photograph of some of the energy for girls using the pole bending machine to bend their poles.
This is how we marked where to cut and bend the poles.
This is how we cut the poles. It is a small circular object but has a sharp blade inside as it is used to cut different types of poles.
Today was our fourth week of Energy for Girls and we started off the day looking at the main power stations
Coal, Nuclear, Hydro & Gas
Once we filled in the sheets of how the power stations work we split of into groups to research the topics been given. Some of us went on laptops and the rest got books to find out as much research for the presentation.
Doing the presentations was fun and effective as we made it enjoyable for our peers in the class. As well as making it fun we were able to broaden our knowledge and understanding of how power stations work.
After the presentations we made our way down to the workshop. We looked at copper piping and how to bend and cut it. Everyone had their own chance to cut a bit of pipe and some of us took our piece we cut home to show people what we have down in this course.
Overall today has been an enjoyable day learning about how power stations work ,interacting with the presentations and bending/cutting copper pipes.
