Raising Attainment for pupils with English as an Additional Language

Keynote speaker: Audrey May, Attainment Advisor, Dundee City Council. The Scottish Attainment Challenge.

1. Creative Singing and Chanting with young EAL learners: Songs and chants enable young EAL learners to participate in activities, to tune into the sounds and rhythms of English and are also fun! Patricia Grimes and Maureen Wylie from the EAL Service in Glasgow City Council have developed a resource full of creative ways to use songs and chants with EAL learners in the early level.
2. Literacy for older learners: a series of lessons and strategies developed by Labinder Sekhon from the EAL Service in Glasgow City Council to help older learners to develop literacy skills in English using an approach to phonics that is appropriate for older learners. Of interest to anyone who works with learners in upper primary or secondary who are not literate in English.
3. Bilingual children on the autistic spectrum: making positive changes through music therapy. Dundee’s Bilingual Pupils’ Support Service are working collaboratively with Education Psychologists on an intervention to improve listening, concentration, communication and relationship building in young EAL learners on the autistic spectrum.
