Thinking of Studying Medicine- Message from In2MedSchool @ Glasgow University

Over the last year, we’ve created a national program called In2MedSchool, which is a FREE MENTORING initiative for students from widening participation backgrounds and want to/are thinking of applying to study Medicine.

So far, we have around 2,400 mentors, all of which are doctors or medical students and ready to offer 1:1 mentoring sessions to your students in S5. To date, we have matched 1000 students. In order to ensure the safety of our students, we have carried out DBS/PVG checks on all our mentors. All our mentors have agreed to follow our Code of Conduct, which can be found on our website.

I’m reaching out today to ask if you have students that would like to join our program. Should you have any aspiring medics or medical society at your school, please forward them this email. Students can apply here: https://bit.ly/I2MS-Mentee

The application form above must be filled out by the student. It will ask them about what they intend to gain from the programme and whether they fit our widening participation admission criteria. After submitting the form, the student and their parent/guardian will receive a permission slip which must be returned to us before the student can be matched.

Whilst we primarily offer a mentoring service, we also run events open to all students who would like to learn more about life as a doctor/medical student, our tips and tricks, UCAT/BMAT/exam support and much more. You can find more information on our website: www.in2medschool.com.

Students in S5 and should sign up to the scheme directly; we will then obtain their parent/guardian’s permission and match them with one of our medical student or doctor mentors.

Social Mobility Foundation

I want to let you know of the Social Mobility Foundation opportunity below. It is a great opportunity and around 6 pupils every year from Rosshall take part. It looks great on applications and can really broaden your horizons. If interested, come and speak with me in Pastoral Care.

I am looking to arrange an input from them for pupils interested in the programme. Note the eligibility criteria is: Currently in S5 and have at least 4 A/Bs at National 5 and be predicted AABB in Scottish Highers.

Please find further information from the SMF below:

APP CityThe APP supports high achieving S5 students from across the UK to access top universities and careers. We offer support through our four pillars:

1.     Mentoring by a professional

2.     Tailored skills sessions and career workshops

3.     University application support and guidance

4.     Internships with top employers

How students receive our four pillars of support is dependent on where they live; we offer face to face activity where possible alongside a range of virtual sessions and online resources. Watch our video to hear from SMF students.

APP Employer Insights ProgrammesStudents at Rosshall Academy can apply for one of our sector or employer insight programmes as well as APP City. The internship element of these insight programmes will take place in summer 2022. The sector or employer insights available are:

·        J.P. Morgan Finance

·        J.P. Morgan Digital

·        KPMG Accountancy

·        BP Engineering

·        PA Consulting Springboard

·        Neil Stevens Fellowship Digital

·        Law Insight (employer partners are Freshfields, Clifford Chance, Linklaters, Herbert Smith Freehills, White & Case and Akin Gump)

We ran our employer insight programmes online over the past two summers but are hoping to deliver them in-person in summer 2022 once government guidance allows. The majority of insight programmes take place in London, where students will live in university accommodation, complete an internship at a top firm during the day and take part in activities during the evening and weekends. This is all completely free of charge. Regardless of whether they take place in person or virtually, students will gain a rich insight into the sector and employer. They will be offered skills sessions on topics such as employability skills and networking, mentoring from an employee at the firm, and university application advice and guidance.

The programme of support extends right through university until students are in graduate recruitment, and the support at university changes depending on what career they are aspiring to enter.

Eligibility CriteriaThe criteria for your students is:

  • Currently in S5 and have at least 4 A/Bs at National 5 and be predicted AABB in Scottish Highers

Please come and see me and or/ email me directly to express intertest in this great opportunity.

Thanks
Mr Clelland
