Week beginning 14/11/22

This week has been a super busy week at Oakburn with our first sessions of ‘stay and play’ which was a great success!
We had great feedback from our parents saying they loved seeing all the learning taking place.

Here is a look of what we got upto!

The courtyard

The children have been collecting different sizesand colours of leaves and other autumnal loose parts from the garden and outings they have been on. We decided to use these and create some self portraits. The children decided what loose parts they wanted to use as eyes, nose, arms and legs. They did a great job!

In our recent development in the courtyard, we have introduced more fine motor and STEM related experiences. We have had a focus on different materials and by using magnets the children have explored and discussed which items are magnetic 🧲. The children helped collect leaves from the garden and we mixed in resources from around the courtyard to create a familiar discovery experience. A very good provocation led by the children ⭐️

Woodwork area

This week in the woodwork area we have been exploring different patterns. The children have been creating their own pattern using pencils and following the pattern with a hammer, nails and different coloured beads. Some of the children were creating their own patterns using a sequence of coloured beads.

Outdoors

Outside the children have been using their fine motor skills to build our new birdhouse together. The children worked as a team taking turns using the screwdriver to put all the parts together.  The children discussed where they would like to put the birdhouse in the garden. “At the top of the tree” – AH.

This week we have also been celebrating nursery rhyme week.
In the village  we have been exploring the rhyme hickory dickery dock – looking at numbers recognition and learning about time.

In small world we have been exploring the rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” and “incy wincy spider” this involved lots of skills such as counting, matching numbers, fine motor skills and positional language.

In the expressive area we looked at the rhymes “twinkle twinkle” and “incy winch” the children used their creative skills to make their own spider using pipe cleaners, string and mark making materials.

In the literacy area we have been looking at our rhyme of the month “hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle”. The children have been enjoying looking at the props and recreating their own scenarios with these. The children then had to sequence what character appeared first, second, third and fourth in the the rhyme.

In the fine motor area explored Humpty Dumpty  rhyme using paint sticks, to draw Humpty Dumpty and write ‘H’ and ‘D’… The paint sticks proved very popular and are a new addition to our mark making resources.

thanks again to everyone who came to our stay and play sessions this week and thanks for all the continued support.
