Public Sector Organisations

Ownership

  • Public sector organisations are owned by the government.
  • PSOs may operate in the tertiary sector providing services to communities and individuals.
  • PSOs tend to provide goods and services which the private sector may not provide in sufficient quantities, as there is not enough profit to be made.
  • Local councils provide services such as education, housing, leisure and recreation, and street lighting.

Running of Public Sector Organisations

  • At local government level eg Scottish Borders Council – the public will elect councillors to make major decisions. They will employ managers, administrators, and other workers to make the day-to-day decisions.
  • Civil Servants will make decisions for the government

Finance

  • Funding for PSOs come from taxes eg Council Tax, Corporation tax, Road Tax etc
