Measuring using parts of the body- maths

IMG_2402[1]  In the imaginative area we thought we needed a height chart in the Doctors’ Surgery.  We decided to make our own.  Maureen got a long piece of paper and we took it out into the nursery hall.  We worked together to make a pattern with 4 colours.  When it was dry Maureen put it up in the Doctors’ surgery for us. Now we can see how many hands tall we are.

Investigating the senses

IMG_2362[1]Pam Cameron, our HNC Student from Anniesland College, has been carrying out some science experiments with the children to test our senses.  This ties in with the work being done throughout the nursery on Our Bodies and will help deepen the children’s understanding of how the body works and how we interact with our world.  In this picture the children are watching how ice melts when heated by the hot air from a hair dryer.  Science is exciting!

Junk Appeal

Lynn would be very grateful for cereal boxes, tubs, kitchen roll tubes and all other manner of recycling, to fill up our junk modelling materials boxes which are very low just now due to some very creative modelling last week.  Many thanks.

Thanks too for all the medical supplies you have donated for the Doctor’s Surgery.  As you can see from the pictures we are now looking well stocked.  The children love it.

This week in Nursery

Our medical theme continues to prove very popular.  The look out post is to be turned into an ambulance to take patients to the hospital and the doctors’ surgery.  IMG_2350[1] IMG_2352[1]

Here is our state of the art Doctor’s Surgery, equipped with an x-ray machine and lots and lots of bandages.

On Tuesday morning, Blue and Orange groups are going to gym.  Afternoon children go to gym today too!

On Friday we have our music specialist Susan, visiting nursery with another Snappy Sounds Musical Workshop.

Friday is also the first meeting of the Infant Pupil Council.  Nursery will be represented by 2 of our morning children and an Early Years Worker.  This is the first time we have been invited to be part of the council and we are all excited to hear what happens.  We will keep you posted!

On Friday Lynn is attending a course on Play on Pedals – this is designed to promote the riding of 2 wheeler bikes in Nursery, using balance bikes to promote children’s confidence.

‘Top Marks’ – our maths game of the day

IMG_2332[1]

Today we used ‘Top Marks’ – a free, downloadable educational site.  We used number recognition games with a very clever wee person who can count and recognise to 100, and other games with counting and number recognition to 5 and to 10.  Great fun!

Sensory Play -Investigating the digestive system

IMG_2317[1]IMG_2310[1]IMG_2318[1]

Today Elisabeth created a digestive system consisting of a mouth, an oesophagus or food pipe and a stomach – (the water tray).  This morning the children had fun feeding the system with jelly.  This afternoon, porridge and lentils are on the menu and tomorrow it’s spaghetti!! Looking forward to posting some really nice, messy play pictures!

Nursery Vote on Use of Look-out post

IMG_2307[1]

Today we all cast our vote to decide what our look out post theme would be for the month.  The choices were:  Tree House, Green House, Writing Den or Ambulance.  The vote will not be final until everyone has voted, but we have it on good authority that the Ambulance is looking popular, followed closely by the tree house!  Watch this space for the result of the ballot!
