About the organisation
Social Enterprise Academy has been working with young people in schools since 2007 and has a proven track record on delivering learning that is relevant, engaging, creative, inspirational and contextualised for young people. In effect learning that changes lives.
In the last 3 years we have expanded our provision to cover young people 16 – 24 who are not covered by the school system and who, for a number of reasons, have not yet achieved a sustained destination in learning, volunteering or permanent employment.
We firmly believe that social entrepreneurs can be found anywhere, at any time and at any stage in their development. This includes within our schools, colleges and universities. That’s why our programmes are aimed at encouraging and supporting young people to discover and develop their enterprise, entrepreneurial and employability skills and introduce them to the social enterprise business model as a way of doing better business.
Our schools, colleges and universities are at the heart of any community and involvement in social enterprise is demonstrating the role they have to play.

The Social Enterprise in Education Programme
In 2007 the Academy was invited to work with Scottish Government to help develop the enterprise, entrepreneurial and employability skills of young people.
Our role was to help young people, and their teachers, understand the social enterprise business model and establish their own social enterprises in schools.
We do this by developing an understanding amongst young people of the social enterprise business model and giving them the opportunity to get involved hands on in a social enterprise in line with the principles of Curriculum for Excellence.
Since the start of the programme we have supported over 700 primaries, secondary and additional support needs schools to establish successful, viable and actively-trading social enterprises (all being run by young people, with turnovers of up to £50,000 per annum).
We’ve worked with young people in all sectors of education and in local authorities across Scotland helping them to:
- Understand what social enterprise is
- Identify a social aim
- Develop their business plan
- Think through their social purpose
- Introduce them to practicing social entrepreneurs who then act as mentors, nurturing them and helping them embed social enterprise as a key part of their educational establishments ethos
There are a number of ways in which a school, college, university or organisation supporting young people can engage with the Academy:
- Through our Understanding Social Enterprise CPD (Continuous Professional Development) Programme for Education Practitioners
- By registering to take part in our Social Enterprise in Education Programme
- By attending one of our awareness raising events such as the Social Enterprise in Education Market Place
- By participating in one of our Social Enterprise Dragon’s Den events
- By participating in a school/college or university Transitions Programme
- By visiting our website and downloading our resources
- By using social enterprise as a vehicle to deliver an SQA accredited programme such as the National Progression Award in Enterprise and Employability
