Placement experiance

Over the past two weeks I have spent my time mostly in a primary 5 class but also had the opportunity spend some afternoons in various other classes within the primary school. This allowed me to see different teaching styles and how teachers adapt lessons to the age and stage of a student. I witnessed many lessons involving all curricular areas which gave me ideas and strategies to carry forward into my own teaching practise. I have had opportunities to take small reading, writing and numeracy groups and give extra support to students who may have been struggling with their work. I have also had the opportunity to conduct a couple of P.E lessons related to gymnastics due to working as a gymnastics coach and training as a gymnast myself.

This placement has allowed me to witness and be involved in a running of a classroom and see how challenging behaviour can be dealt with. It has also allowed me too see some ways in which children are rewarded for their achievements and behaviour, not just in the classroom but throughout the student’s school life.

The school I was placed in was in my home town and I struggled slightly with this as I knew a lot of the children in the class as I coach and train alongside them. Initially it was hard to strike a pupil/ teacher relationship with these certain children as they knew me on a personal level but after a chat with the children about what to call me and how to treat me in school they then understood what was appropriate and what wasn’t appropriate.

Over my time in school I engaged with pupils and staff and built up positive relationships within the classroom and staffroom. All teachers were very supportive and made me feel welcome, answering any questions and queries which I had.  The whole school placement and feedback I received from teachers and peers made me aware of what I need to work on and how I can do that. I learned so much throughout these two weeks and I thoroughly enjoyed my placement experience. It has further concreated my desire to become a primary teacher.
