Advanced Higher Drama

What will I learn?

Drama at advanced higher offers a challenging, practical course which builds on the wide range of skills and abilities developed at previous levels.

During the course you will further develop and apply skills in their acting/directing/design roles to make a creative and coherent theatrical statement. You will explore and analyse key productions that reflect your own acting or design or directing methodologies through research and practical experimentation. You will have the opportunity to deliver live performances to audiences.

How will I learn?

You will be introduced to a variety of theatre methodologies, theatre practices and text to progress your devising skills. Your practice will also be informed by the work of key theatre practitioners. You will demonstrate this om a devised drama production. This will explore how meaning can be communicated to an audience through practical realisation of your own theatrical concepts. You will also evaluate the effectiveness of your concepts.

There will be a lot of independent work throughout the year where you will take the exploration of a theatre practitioner further. You will also be working in a group for devising and part of your final performances.

How will I be assessed?

The advanced higher course assessment involves two written elements: project – dissertation (30%) and an assignment (20%) and a practical performance (50%).

The project- dissertation will demonstrate depth of knowledge and understanding of a relevant performance issue. You will select an area which should allow analysis of performance theories and practice. It will be informed by the work of a current and/or historical theatre practitioner and/or company. This will be marked by SQA, and conducted in centres under conditions specified by SQA.

For the practical performance element, you can choose to be assessed on your acting, directing or as a designer in a live performance.
