Inspired? Get Writing! Creative Writing Competition 2013

School pupils and their teachers are invited to choose an inspirational painting, photograph, print or sculpture from the National Galleries of Scotland’s Collection and to create a piece of poetry or prose not exceeding 1,000 words in length. Works may be viewed in person, or online at www.nationalgalleries.org/onlinecollections

There are three categories for school pupils:

Category A School Pupils Under 12

Category B School Pupils 12-14 Years of Age

Category C School Pupils 15-18 Years of Age

There will be ten awards in each category: Winner, two Runners-up and seven Special Merit. All will be included in a public reading at the Scottish National Gallery in April 2013.

The shoe fits new animation competition – Edinburgh

Edinburgh City Council announces that children and young people are being encouraged to get creative and follow in the footsteps of a ‘shoe’ in a new competition launched by Edinburgh Museums & Galleries and Red Kite Animation.  Inspired by artist Qian Shi’s award-winning short film about a toy shoe, the ‘Hidden Stories’ animation competition is designed to celebrate Edinburgh’s rich heritage and the art of animation.

Budding animators have until 22 March to submit short films based upon either a real or imagined back story of an object of their choice, housed in one of Edinburgh’s Museums & Galleries.

The Power of the Sea – photography competition

The Power of the Sea is a fantastic chance to flex your creative muscles to win photography equipment and lessons for you and your school!

School pupils from all over Scotland are invited to capture ‘the power of the sea’ in a junior photography competition aimed at highlighting the awesome force and natural resource of the waters around our coast.

Entries will be judged by the critically-acclaimed, world renowned Scottish photographer, David Eustace. So if you’re a budding photographer in Primary, S1-3 or S4-6 then look no further! Submit your entries before the competition closes on 2 November.  Find out more here.

Get Scotland Dancing: The Film

Get Scotland Dancing aims to encourage more people to get active and participate in dance. The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games, provide an unparalleled opportunity to raise the profile of dance as a creative, participative and physical artform. In support of this Scottish Government policy, Creative Scotland will invest £1.5 million across a four year period, creating an inclusive celebration of dance across Scotland, linking into the wider UK and marking Scotland’s place in the world.

Working with Scotland’s key dance organisations, Get Scotland Dancing will bring together professional and amateur dancers of all ages to dance in public spaces in our towns, villages and cities – bringing dance to the people and people to dance. We want to strengthen opportunities to participate in dance and create a lasting legacy for communities throughout Scotland.

This summer thousands of people across the UK, from professional to amateur dancers, young and old were involved in Big Dance 2012, the UK’s biggest celebration of dance as part of the push to Get Scotland Dancing.

During this Glow Meet you will get the chance to hear from and chat with St Brigid’s Primary school as they talk about their experience of entering and winning Moving Stories 2011 and how you can enter the competition this year! Engross Theatre is a registered charity that brings the principles of the Curriculum for Excellence to children with additional support needs, through educationally based theatre. Education Scotland publishes a new quality improvement framework for culture and sport provision.

Working in partnership with VOCAL (the association for culture and leisure managers in Scotland) and the Scottish Government, Education Scotland has now published a final version of How good is our culture and sport? A quality improvement framework for culture and sport provision.

The aim of this publication is to support continuous improvement among the range of organisations that provide services and activities for culture and sport in local areas.

While the principal target and user of the framework is the local authority, it is recommended that local authorities work with others, for example service-providing organisations, including those involved as community planning partners on self-evaluation using the framework.  By using it, all of these organisations will be able evaluate their strengths and areas for improvement in providing culture and sport and also the impact of that provision on their communities.

The guidance is centred on using self-evaluation as a key driver for continuous improvement.  It defines what self-evaluation for improvement is about, and notes that ‘evidence shows there is a strong link between robust self-evaluation, led by effective leadership and management, and the development of the capacity for further improvement’.
