Kids get doodling to feel happier and healthier

Through a partnership with local secondary schools, East Dunbartonshire Council and local mental health charity East Dunbartonshire Association for Mental Health, first year school pupils were tasked with doodling away to their hearts content to celebrate ‘National Doodle Day’.

The event focused on ‘changing minds’ – looking at how positive mental health and well being are important in making minds happier and healthier.  First year pupils were asked to doodle about something they like to help their mind and body get healthy and happy. Each school chose a winner and the winners were put into a grand prize draw which was won by a pupil from Bearsden Academy.

Hairy Maclary theatre production for young children

‘Out of the gate and off for a walk, went Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy.’

Anyone with young children will recognise these immortal words instantly as the opening lines of the book ‘Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy’ by Lynley Dodd.  Following a Sell-Out run at the Fringe 2010, Hairy Maclary and his friends are springing off the page once again this Summer.

Featuring many of the characters from the books like Hercules Morse, as big as a Horse – Bottomley Potts, covered in spots – Schnitzel von Krumm, with the very low tum and Scarface Claw – the toughest tomcat in town.    With music, singing and several of your favourite Hairy Maclary stories, this show is a must for the whole family.

MUMS.NET:- “…Hairy Maclary was fab, my nearly 3 year old practically levitated in excitement…”

Discussing Taboos in Children’s Theatre

Imaginate event in partnership with Lung Ha’s Theatre Company

Thursday 4th August, 1700 – 1900, Stockbridge House, Edinburgh

Booking necessary – details of how to book included below.

What makes suitable drama for children? Should children be entertained and challenged, or should a trip to the theatre be an escape from the pressures of everyday life? Is it taboo to address the issue of death, suicide, mental health and family breakdown in theatre for children?

Imaginate is delighted to be working in partnership with Lung Ha’s to welcome Suzanne Osten to present her views on Taboos in Children’s Theatre at this discussion.  Osten states: ‘There are no taboos, only adults’ ambiguous ways of trying to deal with things.’

Suzanne will be joined by a panel including Andy Cannon, David Greig and Lu Kemp to discuss and debate this provocative topic.
