Pupils Document their Community in Exhibition inspired by German Photographer

A new exhibition of artwork by pupils from Turriff, Peterhead and Mintlaw Academies inspired by the German photographer August Sander has gone on display at Duff House, Banff.

The pupils have been working with local artists Amy Davenport and Fergus Connor to produce the body of work which will be exhibited at the north-east visitor attraction during August and September. Duff House is currently hosting an exhibition of portraits by Sander, regarded as one of the 20th century’s most influential photographers. The pupils researched his works and techniques to document their own communities in a manner similar to that practiced by Sander in his portfolio ‘People of the 20th Century’.

Pupils’ artwork goes on permanent display as schools consider “our place in time”

Artwork created by school children for the John Gray Centre’s opening exhibition has been returned to the three schools involved for permanent display.
Our Place in Time was an exhibition of visual art. John Gray Centre development staff worked with schools, young people and community groups to explore the archive and local history collections and then create pieces that brought together what they had learned with the children’s own memories and personal experiences. The project highlighted how the past and present can be brought together in a creative and fun way.

A day at the Opera House

Grange Academy youngsters visited the former Opera House construction site on John Finnie Street, Kilmarnock, recently to see how to apply what they had learned in the classroom to the world of work. The third year Graphic Communication class heard about the history of the Opera House and why the site was being brought back to life. Pupils were given the opportunity to view drawings which surveyors and builders used in the project.

The National Records of Scotland, in partnership with the Scottish Parliament, is mounting an exhibition in the Parliament from Wednesday 15 August to Saturday 8 September 2012 featuring two surviving original documents with a direct link to William Wallace. Contributions for the exhibition must be submitted to the Scottish Parliament Education Service by Friday 15 June. Full details about this and the Education
Programme during the exhibition are available on the Scottish Parliament website (www.scottish.parliament.uk/education/wallace <http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/education/wallace> ).
