#DareToDream: Invitation to All Schools

We  invite all schools to be a part of our storytelling festival local campaign this year, #DaretoDream. The campaign is an outreach initiative running from September to November, book-ending and running alongside our Scottish International Storytelling Festival (a ten day festival running from Friday 21st—Monday 31st October).

By taking part, your school will be contributing to a Scotland-wide initiative inviting and creating space for children to imagine their personal and collective futures, which in turn will build confidence to begin to make these aspirations and ambitions a reality.

We hope that this initiative is an easy way to progress creative learning in your school community with maximum impact, at the same time creating a positive and inclusive experience for pupils.

“Discover the stories of the past and dream the stories of the future. What are the stories of your local place? What stories would you tell to the world today, from the future of your dreams? Everything created must first be imagined: explore the possible and Dare to Dream!”

The principles of creative learning, active learning and inclusion are embedded in this project. Through dreaming, the liberating power of the imagination is open to everyone – neither language nor disability are barriers to participation. The campaign is relevant to the entire school and to every subject area. Activities will also help meet outcomes in both Literacy and Health and Wellbeing.

In an ever-changing world, we believe that it is vital that children are educated about their role and the value they have in shaping a vibrant and sustainable future. By setting learning in the context of your local school and focusing on issues relevant to your pupils, our #DareToDream campaign provides a great opportunity for you to encourage children to think about their right to participate, empowering and enabling them to become active citizens, both locally and globally. We provide the context for learning and suggest tasks and activities, but there is no limit on where this engaging topic could be taken in the classroom.

We will run a #DareToDream social media campaign during the main Scottish International Storytelling Festival. During this period we will make visible all contributions via our online platform. This is an opportunity to showcase your own school’s contribution with the wider community should you so wish in the form of a blog, video, photographs or otherwise.

As part of our social media campaign, we will have a special #DareToDream Day on Thursday 27th October.  On this day, we will encourage every creative citizen in Scotland to share a dream for the future on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the campaign hashtags. Our aim is to make visible Scotland’s collective imagination for all to see!

Employability Skills Event – National Galleries – aimed at Secondary Teachers

Employability Skills: Am I A Robot?

  • Tuesday, 4th October 2016, 5.30-7.30pm
  • Free, ticketed.

Portrait Gallery (Scottish National Portrait Gallery)

Aimed at secondary teachers of all subjects. Refreshments provided.

With the avalanche of new products, new technologies and new ways of working, workers are going to have to become more creative…Robots may help us get to where we want to be faster, but they can’t be as creative as humans (yet).  World Economic Forum, Davos 2016

The need to make our young people more employable is unquestionable but how we do this is debatable. With future predictions pointing towards an automated world, what are the skills needed for a future work force? The Future of Jobs report published in 2016 predicts that by 2025 the top 3 skills required will be complex problem solving, critical thinking and creativity.

These are the skills used by artists every day.

Delivered in partnership with Hidden Giants, this session will explore the role of art, artists, culture and value within employability in education.  It will challenge assumptions to find new ways to approach this essential part of schooling.

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Booking required: please book via Eventbrite

Here Comes Everybody explores the concept of creating art as a critical tool; connecting its audience to local and international movements for social and political change. The artists have made use of photo-montage, stencilling, newspapers and other found materials to create a powerful installation that delves into the world of image consumption, challenging our relationship with corporations and the media. Integral to the installation are artworks made in response to War on War Room community workshops taking place throughout the Travelling Gallery tour. CLPL – Teacher’s Introduction to Dazzle Ship in Edinburgh

Wed 1st June 16.30-18.30, Leith Community Education Centre (Kinnaird Hall)

Fri 3rd June 13.30-15.30, Leith Community Education Centre (Shore Room

Refreshments provided

On May 25th Dazzle Ship Scotland, a co-commission between the Edinburgh Art festival and 14-18 NOW, launches down in the Port of Leith marking the centenary of the WW1 Battle of Jutland. Dazzle was a form of WW1 ship camouflage invented by the artist Norman Wilkinson, in which bright bold geometric patterned designs adorned battle ships to confuse the enemy. This summer Turner-Prize nominated artist Ciara Phillips has designed her own dazzle for the MV Fingal berthed in the Port of Leith.

The Dazzle Ship presents interdisciplinary learning opportunities across Social Studies, Mathematics, Technologies and the Expressive Arts. Helena Barrett, Edinburgh Art Festival’s Learning and Engagement Coordinator will run an introductory session to the Dazzle Ship project presenting how you can use the ship and its themes with your learners in your classroom. The session will include a tour of the ship, a presentation on dazzle and an introduction to the EAF Dazzle Teaching Resource. Suitable for all teachers and educational practitioners.

Art Teachers – (almost free) 2 day outdoor residential course

Dumfries and Galloway are offering five places for Art Teachers from other local authorities for a forthcoming outdoor residential course. Here are the details:

Art teachers have been using  the outdoors as a stimulus is for a very long time.  However, following a number of discussions I had with secondary art staff last year, it was apparent that they would welcome an opportunity to get together to exchange ideas as regards the use of outdoor spaces as well as a chance to work with professional artists in such environments.

I am delighted to be able to tell you that some funding to support such an event has been secured and will take place next term.

The course will begin on the afternoon of Thursday 5th May when we will meet up at Stronord Outdoor Centre near Kirroughtree.  There will be a minibus running from Dumfries and attendees can be picked up en route.  There will be sessions on the Thursday evening and Friday, with a workshop on textiles run by Jo Gallant on the Saturday, when I hope that we will be joined by Primary Art specialists.  The course will finish at about 3pm on Saturday 7th May when the mini-bus will return to Dumfries.

The cost for the 2 day residential  including mini-bus transport (where possible), all meals and workshops will be £10.

If interested, I’d be grateful if you could discuss this with your line manager and send me an email indicating your interest as soon as you can. Places on the residential are limited to a maximum of 20 and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

(If you are the Principal Teacher, I’d be grateful if you could forward this to members of your department who might be interested.)

Many thanks
