Scottish National Gallery CPD Workshops – now free!

Life Drawing Inspired by Titian

Saturday 6 September 2014, 10am-4.30pm. FREE. Limited places. Clore Education Centre, Scottish National Gallery.

Inspired by Titian’s dynamic figure poses and loose handling of paint, this course will look at approaches to drawing the figure in an energetic and expressive way. Drawing materials will be combined in layers to achieve some of the effects that Titian sought and that Degas emulated in his own pastel paintings. Charcoal, ink and chalk pastels will be used on a variety of surfaces. Led by artist Damian Callan.

GENERATION: 25 Years of Contemporary Art in Scotland

Friday 26 September 2014, 1.30–4.30pm & Saturday 27 September 2014, 10am-4.30pm. FREE. Limited places. Clore Education Centre, Scottish National Gallery.

This short intensive CPD course for Teachers will begin with an examination and discussion of the GENERATION exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery – exploring ideas, materials and processes.

Thereafter, we will work in the Clore studio from our own creative ideas and those inspired by the exhibition. A variety of conventional and unconventional materials will be available to engage and experiment with, helping us to consider how choice of media, technique and form communicate meaning.
Whilst the main focus of the workshop is to allow participants personal creative exploration time, we will discuss how the ideas and materials introduced in the workshop could be used successfully in the classroom. Led by artist Audrey Grant.

Flash Fiction Writing Competition 2014

The Special Collections Centre is home to the University’s historic collections of books, manuscripts, archives and photographs.

For the third year running the Special Collections Centre is running a Flash Fiction Competition for Book Week Scotland. Get inspired by four fabulous images from the rare books and archives collections and send in your 500-word short story. Prizes to be won for both children and adult categories! Continued Professional Development – National Galleries of Scotland

We can provide exciting and stimulating Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions for whole schools, departments, art forums and cluster groups.

These sessions cover a range of topics, such as:

•how art can support and extend the Curriculum for Excellence

•increasing teachers’ confidence in using object-based learning in the Galleries and the classroom

•developing teachers’ skills in looking at art

•using works of art in the classroom creatively

•practical experience in different art techniques

Above sessions can be booked for a half day or full day. We also offer specialist hands-on workshops for Secondary Art Teachers and Primary Art Specialists.

Tesco Bank Art Competition for schools

The Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools 2015 is now open for entries.

With fun, inspiring themes for nursery, lower and upper primary, secondary and special education schools we hope you enjoy looking at, talking about and finally making your own art. You can download each of the categories separately. All winning artworks will be framed and exhibited at the Scottish National Gallery with a selection featured in a colourful calendar posted to every school in Scotland.

Applications open for YDance Routes Connections Weekend, audition for the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland, Inclusive Dance Training Opportunity, back to school and the 2014 Scottish Learning Festival.
APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR YDANCE ROUTES CONNECTIONS ON MONDAY
#YDanceRoutes Connections is back for 2014 and applications open this Monday (18 August). We’re heading to Edinburgh College again for 2 and a bit days of fantastic dance workshops – Fri 24 to Sun 26 October 2014.

As usual we’re doing things on a first come first served basis so make sure that you get your form in quickly. We’re also asking for a £10 non-refundable deposit per person this year, to cover the cost of food for the weekend, which you also need to give us with your application.

AUDITION FOR THE NATIONAL YOUTH DANCE COMPANY OF SCOTLAND
For the very first time we’re opening up auditions for the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland to any young dancer aged 16 to 21.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a flagship company who represent Scotland at key events and festivals, locally, nationally and internationally.

If you’re aged 16 to 21, have an interest and passion for dance and are free to rehearse one weekend a month then this could be for you.

FREE INCLUSIVE DANCE TRAINING COURSE OPPORTUNITY
Dance Artists and Professionals have the chance to take part in this free inclusive working session led by the fantastic Caroline Bowditch – 10am to 1pm on 26 August at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Funded by the Glasgow 2014 Access Fund this is an excellent opportunity to explore inclusive practice, what it means to you as a practitioner and how it can enhance your work.

Teachers Open Evening – Filmhouse, Edinburgh

Filmhouse Cinema, Edinburgh, is hosting a Teachers Open Evening on Wednesday 3rd Sept from 4.30-6pm for all teachers with an interest in film literacy and in using film to support the curriculum.

Showcasing upcoming schools screenings, including French, Spanish and Take One Action Film Festivals, the event will also include details of film education programme Understanding Cinema.  Jo Spence, Programme Coordinator from Into Film will also attend to discuss Into Film activity across Scotland. Refreshments will be provided and those attending are welcome to see Two Days, One Night at the 6pm show.

Frozen Sing-A-Long, Take One Action, and Africa in Motion

Dear teachers,

I wanted to let you know about schools screenings we’ve added for the new term.

For nurseries, we’re putting on Frozen Sing-A-Long. We’re finding little ones are pretty keen on this event! We’ve also linked to some learning resources to go with Frozen suitable for pre-school ages – see listing for more details.

Primary classes will be interested in two screenings we’re putting on as part of Africa in Motion. Khumba for lower secondary is a great tale about a half-striped zebra overcoming discrimination, whilst Felix, about a disadvantaged child in South Africa who wants to be a saxophonist, will appeal to upper primary and lower secondary. Free for Glasgow City Council schools with learning resources available.

For secondary classes, we are taking part in this year’s Take One Action Film Festival with screenings focusing on human rights in different parts of the world. The Revolutionary Optimists explores the lives of children living in poverty-striken areas of India, whilst Inequality for All follows an inspiring activist taking on social deprivation in the USA. Our Africa in Motion events for upper secondary are Ivory Coast-set French language animation Aya of Yop City and South African surfing morality tale, Otelo Burning. These films are all free for Glasgow City Council schools and there are links to various learning resources on the listing.

Glasgow Youth Film Festival continues its new monthly nights for older children who might be considering a career in the media industries. On Thursday 11th September, we’ll welcome executive producers from BBC Scotland to give a masterclass on working in children’s TV and multiplatform content. Young people aged 15-21 can get discounted tickets for these events by signing up to GFT’s Youth Card. Please encourage any pupils interested in media to come along!

For younger children, our Take 2 and Access Take 2 programme of FREE films for Glasgow Kidz and Young Scots Card holders plus accompanying adults continues every Saturday morning at GFT.
