This half-day seminar will highlight the work of Fiona Muhsin from Dundee and Angus College  who will talk about how she has transformed the curriculum design and delivery of the HND Interactive Media course, and discuss with participants what aspects they may be able to adopt and adapt into their own  particular areas.  Fiona will be available to answer questions and offer support to individuals and teams looking to change the way they deliver their particular curriculum area.

Fiona describes her approach as a dynamic approach to teaching and learning using, at its core, an enterprise project based methodology.

Nurturing Talent Time To Shine Fund – arts funding for 14-20 year olds

Young Scot and Creative Scotland launch a new £40,000 Nurturing Talent – Time to Shine Fund for young people aged 14 – 20 years old.

The funding, which is being administered by Young Scot over the next two years, will be awarded to those who demonstrate ambition, enthusiasm or talent in their chosen art form and require some financial support to develop or promote this further.

Individual awards of up to £200 or group awards of up to £750 are available for endeavours such as auditioning, training, staging an exhibition, recording a demo, publishing written work, hosting a workshop or setting up a local group.

The next deadlines for applications are:

◾12 April 2015.

Portfolio Preparation Course – National Galleries of Scotland

Led by artist Audrey Grant

This course is for 16+ year olds preparing folios for entry to art college. The GENERATION exhibition will be used as a starting point for exploring ideas, materials and processes.

Each day takes a different theme: Enquiry and Visual Research, Idea Development, Material and Technical Exploration, Life Drawing and Creation of a resolved piece of work, finishing with an informal group critique on Friday.

Cost: £50 per student (all materials will be provided) Lunch not provided. If cost is a barrier to participation, please contact us.

Venue: Scottish National Gallery, The Mound, Edinburgh EH2 2EL (Clore Education Studio)

Times: 10am – 4pm Monday – Thursday & 10am – 12.30pm Friday

Stills Young Photographers Club – 15-17 year olds

Stills’ is a vibrant platform for creativity that provide the best photographic darkrooms and digital production facilities in Scotland. Stills Young Photographers Club are offering young people age 15-17 and exciting opportunity to develop their own photographic projects using Still’s facilities whilst being supported by two photographer artists.

This is a ten week course running weekly from Friday 12th September – Friday 21 November from 2pm – 4pm concluding with an exhibition in Stills’ showcasing the photographs produced by the young photographers.

Does inequality matter? Arguments against its corrosive effects rarely come as cogently and powerfully expressed as in this rousing exposé. Robert Reich, who served Presidents Ford, Carter and Clinton, charts the history of America’s rich/poor divide and argues that the status quo is not sustainable. But this is not just an American story: the UK is one of the most unequal countries in the developed world; in Scotland, the 3 richest families own more wealth than 20% of the population (source: Oxfam report). What are the root causes of inequality and what can we do about it? This topical film allows us to explore the issue in a refreshingly entertaining and accessible way.

This uplifting documentary shows Kolkata slum children not as victims, but as empowered agents of change. Despite being dealt a difficult hand (with limited access to education and poor health prospects) the young people refuse to give in to resignation. They are supported by Amlan Ganguly, a lawyer turned community educator who faces down child labour, early marriage and endemic poverty with the unfailing belief that children must meaningfully participate in the decisions and factors that affect them.

Exploring SCRAN – 390,000 images, movies and sounds from museums, galleries, archives and the media

Highland teachers are invited to attend the session arranged for Wednesday 8th October, at the Dingwall Education Centre. Anyone interested in coming along to the training can book via Highland CPD. This is an excellent opportunity to support the GTCS Professional Review process and expand professional learning plans.

Scran sessions aim to show teachers how to tap into a vast visual resource, become familiar with the functions of the website, www.scran.ac.uk for research & investigation – as well as considering new applications for classroom activity.

Staff can find out how to acquire imagery & information to illuminate teaching & learning practice.  All 390,000 records on Scran are rights cleared for educational use and the content can be used across the curriculum. The session consists of a presentation followed by an enjoyable series of online tasks exploring the potential of Scran.

Scran is listed on the GTCS register of approved CPD providers and on Education Scotland’s PLFind.

GENERATION – Contemporary Art Tours, Workshops, CPD and Projects

GENERATION is a major, nation-wide exhibition project showcasing some of the best and most significant contemporary art to have emerged from Scotland in the last 25 years. Many venues involved in GENERATION offer opportunities for educators including one off tours, workshops, CPD and longer term projects. You can use the venue pages on the GENERATION website to find the contact details of galleries near you.

If you are looking for more information about using contemporary art in the classroom, the new website feature ‘GENERATION 12/25 – Educators’ may help. It explores the potential for using examples of contemporary art when working with young people, and highlights a range of digital resources on offer.
