CLD Standards Council are working with the Social Enterprise Academy to host three one day events across Scotland in late September 2012.
The events, part of the our Ideas Academy programme, will bring together small groups comprising six community learning and development practitioners and six social entrepreneurs to learn from each other’s action and experience.
Edinburgh International Festival today launched Festival Backstage, a behind-the-scenes mini site for Festival 2012 which offers a backstage glimpse of what goes into putting the Festival together, with videos and interviews with artists, staff members and fans made by young local filmmakers. The first film is about Julien Thibault, a young dancer from French company Ballet Preljocaj, who takes a break from rehearsals to talk about the challenges and the excitement of being a professional dancer. This year, in partnership with Standard Life and Napier University, they are running a competition offering one lucky young person aged between 12 and 17 the opportunity to join the Standard Life Festival Backstage production team for a day during the height of the Festival. They are looking for budding film makers or presenters to make a short film reporting on their passion for or experience of something cultural – it could be anything from a weekly dance class, or their talented brother or sister, to a recent trip to the theatre. A selection of the films will be hosted on their digital channels and a panel of experts will choose a winner to join the crew during the Festival, as well as winning tickets to a Festival show.
Entrants to the competition must be between 12 and 17. To enter upload a video (maximum length of 2 minutes) to YouTube and send the link to backstagecompetition@eif.co.uk. Play on the Longest Day – Together, parents and children explore outdoor play Monday 18th June, 3.30pm – 4.00pm |
| In the lead up to Play on the Longest Day on the 21 June 2012, a celebration of play, we will be thinking and talking about practical ideas and activities for outdoor play. We will also be sharing the outdoor play initiative developed at Shotts Nursery Centre, North Lanarkshire in partnership with Grounds for Learning.
The Meet will consist of a panel discussion and panel members will include Julie Buchanan and Alistair Seaman from Grounds for Learning. Film footage taken of the development at Shotts Nursery Centre will be aired during the Glow Meet and discussion time will focus on how parents were actively involved in the initiative. Alistair will also give a flavour of some of the other projects Grounds for Learning are currently taking forward. Participants will have the opportunity to ask the panel questions and share ideas. Creative Identities is part of the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities programme, which reinvests the proceeds of crime back into communities to benefit Scotland’s young people. The Scottish Government has allocated £2.25 million over three years (2011-2014) to Creative Scotland to deliver Creative Identities programme.
The purpose of Creative Identities is to provide access to high quality experiential opportunities in dance, film and music for young people (0-25 years) in communities where there is an identified and demonstrated need.

The Scottish and Credit Qualifications Framework Partnership (SCQFP) invites teachers and those working in community learning to come up with a new title for the guide currently known as the Schools Toolkit. This competition is open to all secondary school teachers and workers in community learning settings in Scotland and the deadline for entries is Friday 29 June 2012.

Activated environment – motivated participants 19 June 2012, 10 am to 4pm, at the Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh Spend a day exploring the mechanics of motivation with a master ‘teaching artist’ and arts education consultant from the USA. “Research shows that the single greatest influence on the quality of an arts learning experience is the motivation of the learner, and the second greatest influence is the social environment that impacts that individual’s motivation. Funded by Scottish Government through the Inspiring Scotland Early Years Early Action
Fund, Licketyspit is the first theatre company commissioned to deliver Early
Intervention in this way. LicketyLeap is a unique immersive theatre project for three
to five year olds, which engages with nursery staff, parents, carers and wider children’s
service providers. Interim evaluation on recent work in North Edinburgh, to be announced
at this event, indicates remarkable results in relation to confidence, social skills,
emotional literacy and resilience and problem solving among the vulnerable early
years children who have participated. This, the first year of the project, will see 230 early
years children in Drumchapel experience LicketyLeap, together with their teachers,
families and carers.
The event will include a presentation, followed by a short film of LicketyLeap in action.
There will be an opportunity for questions and a discussion about the relevance of this
work to other children’s service providers. LicketyLeap has been getting an unprecedented
response from families and carers and is a prime example of the way arts projects can
empower vulnerable children and inspire communities. Local nursery staff engaged in
LicketyLeap deliveries will be present together with representatives from many of the
groups in Glasgow with an interest in nurturing and supporting vulnerable early years
children and their families and carers.
Earlier this year, Glasgow Film Theatre, Starcatchers, Platform and Toad’s Caravan joined forces to produceThis Sucks: The Movie, starring a talented cast of hundreds of children from nurseries around the East-End of Glasgow.
Over two weeks during February, hundreds of children from Glasgow nurseries participated in making the film with directors Matt Addicott and Katy Wilson from Starcatchers and the support of Toad’s Caravan. The film tells the story of Hetty the Hoover and the love of her life — Mike Dust. The concept grew from a previous, highly successful Starcatchers project, This Workshop Sucks, which premiered at the Glasgow Youth Film Festival 2011.
Nursery pupils from Barlanark Family Learning Centre, Helenslea Nursery School, Hullabaloo Children Centre, Sandaig Nursery School and Westercraigs Nursery all took part in the filming. They joined us last week for the world premiere last week at a special ceremony at GFT. Click here to see photos of our red carpet premiere!

For three days leading up to the Edinburgh Art Festival, International artist Tim Rollins and his collective, Kids of Survival (K.O.S), invite young people to take part in a unique one-off art event at the Talbot Rice Gallery during July 2012.
Over two days, young people will work directly with K.O.S members Tim, Angel and Rick to finish a unique work of art based the classic adventure novel ‘Treasure Island’ by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. This work will feature in the forthcoming exhibition at the Talbot Rice Gallery.
Tim Rollins and K.O.S are an artist collective from New York who create original artworks inspired by classic novels, speeches and music. The group act as an artist team whose members are of different ages and from all types of different backgrounds.
Since the formation of K.O.S in 1981, works by the group are now part of prestigious private and public collections across the world including the Museum of Modern Art (New York); The Tate Gallery (London) and The Hirshhorn Museum of Art (Washington D.C)
Tim Rollins & K.O.S are a key highlight of this years’ Edinburgh Art Festival (EAF), the UK’s largest annual festival dedicated to visual art. The new work created in Edinburgh and based on ‘Treasure Island’ will feature prominently in the Talbot Rice Gallery exhibition.
