My Place Photography Competition Winners 2016

The Scottish Civic Trust has announced the winners of its annual My Place Photography Competition which is supported by Historic Environment Scotland.   Certificates and prizes for the winning and commended photographs were presented by David Middleton, Chief Executive of Historic Environment Scotland at a special ceremony at The Lighthouse in Glasgow on Tuesday 22nd March.

The winner of the primary school category is Scott McFadzean of Gargieston Primary School, Kilmarnock for his photograph ‘The Path Beyond’ and the winner of the secondary school category is Fin Siderfin of Kirkwall Grammar School, Orkney for his photograph ‘Golden Solitude’.

With a focus on contemporary and street dance styles learn how to warm up your pupils, play creative dance games, teach a simple sequence, develop a sequence, use stimulus to create dance material and encourage your pupils to develop their confidence, creativity and co-operation skills. These sessions for secondary teachers also address some of the CfE Health and Well-being outcomes.

 

Nat 5 Dance

This SQA qualification requires students to study 2 different dance styles and choreography to achieve this national qualification. Choose from the options listed below to build your own National 5 Dance course.

Higher Dance

This SQA qualification requires students to study 2 contrasting dance styles and choreography to achieve this national qualification. Choose from the options listed below to build your own Higher Dance course.

Two days are allocated to each style to allow time for technique class, exploration of sequences and support to develop a centre set performance solo, meeting the outcomes set out in the Higher Dance Performance unit. Two days are allocated for Choreography to cover the Higher Dance Practice Activity Assessment requirements and to demonstrate the progression through the learning outcomes.

New RSA Publications – creative schools and creative systems

The Creativity Portal has two new pieces of content this week from the RSA that educators at both a school level and a senior management, strategic level will find fascinating and transformative.

RSA: Giving Schools the Power to Create – Developing creative capacities in learners and teachers

A summary paper on how schools can best develop pupils’ creative capacities by the RSA. The paper includes 12 design principles for action and offers a clear overview of the international picture on creativity skills.

RSA Report: Creative Public Leadership – school system leaders and system-wide innovation

A report from the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) and WISE (World Innovation Summit for Education) that asks how school system leaders can create the conditions for system-wide innovation. The report sets out nine first steps to re-orient the role public system leaders might play.

2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design – events

2016 is the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design (YIAD). Events forming part of a year-long programme will use our stunning architecture, thriving creative industries and spirit of invention to show visitors that Scotland stands shoulder to shoulder with the very best in the world when it comes to cutting edge, contemporary design and technological knowhow.

As part of this VisitScotland have launched the new Spirit of Scotland campaign. It focusses on seven traits that best describe the people and landscapes of Scotland: warmth, humour, guts, spark, soul, determination and fun.

 

With 28 funded events and an increasing array of partner events, the programme for the Year is fuller and more exciting than ever.

New ways of creating work and the skills required for the 21st Century Creative Industries

The Scottish Drama Training Network is a unique organisation committed to developing practice-based drama training in Scotland and our annual Conference is for anyone working in drama training, creative skills development and the Theatre, Film and Television Industries.   You are invited to join us to discuss and debate innovation and creativity in:

  • approaches to training
  • developing and supporting artistic practice
  • pathways to a career in the Creative Industries.
With presentations on sector leading innovative practice, a Keynote speech by the acclaimed Theatre Maker Cora Bissett, and the opportunity to meet with colleagues and peers, this event will be a highlight of the SDTN calendar.

 

The Conference will take place at the Edinburgh International Festival centre, The Hub, followed by a networking reception at the Lyceum Theatre.

Association of Media Education Conference 2016 – How Good is our Creativity?

The Association for Media Education in Scotland conference takes place at Forth Valley College Stirling Campus on Saturday 4 June 2016. The theme is ‘How good is our Creativity?’ and the keynote speaker is Clive Gillman Director, Creative Industries at Creative Scotland. There is also a choice of 15 production and analysis workshops for primary, secondary and further education teachers. As well the focus on creativity there are 3 sessions on media representations of the refugee crisis. Full details at the AMES website ames.scot.

Call for Seminars for SLF 2016

The call for seminar proposals for the SLF 2016 programme is now open.  The Festival will once again host around 100 seminars over the two days and you are invited to submit a proposal to be part of the programme.

 

Is there a project you have been working on that could be showcased? Or perhaps you are aware of establishments that demonstrate good practice?

 

The Scottish Learning Festival 2016 will take place on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 September in the SECC, Glasgow.

 

The Scottish Learning Festival 2016: Promoting excellence and equity for all through:

  • school leadership and school improvement;
  • assessing children’s progress and parental engagement; and
  • teacher professionalism.

 

As you will see, this year’s theme actively promotes the key drivers of improvement in the National Improvement Framework. Full details of the theme, along with the online submission form, are available on the SLF website.

 

If you would like to submit a proposal for consideration, please do so before Friday 19 February.  All proposals must be submitted online.

 

Proposals received after the closing date will not be considered for inclusion in the conference programme.

 

There is a robust review, evaluation and scoring system in place to help ensure that all submissions are treated equally therefore it is essential that all requests to participate go through the submission process and adhere to the timescales.

 

Last year we received in excess of 300 proposals for the 100 seminar places which allowed Education Scotland to deliver a relevant and balanced conference programme covering all key areas of education.  The 2016 conference programme and registration will be launched in May and will feature the sessions that have been submitted and selected for inclusion.

Transitions 20/40 – Production and Screen studies at the Royal Conservatoire

Transitions 20/40 seeks to help people from key Scottish postcodes who would like to study either Dance, Drama, Music, Production or Screen at a higher level, but are unsure of how to.

 

Transitions 20/40 supports those who have talent and show commitment by offering free access to Royal Conservatoire workshops, classes and short courses in preparation for audition or training at a higher education level. Help is also offered in terms of  other costs, such as travel. Do you know anyone aged 15 or over, who has skills in painting, design, woodwork or filmmaking?  We are interested in hearing from anyone who has an interest in these areas.

Get involved with Voluntary Arts Week 2016

A wide range of self-led arts activity takes place each week, in cities, towns and villages across the country – an estimated 10,000 voluntary arts groups meet in Scotland alone – from voluntary-led choirs and craft groups to amateur dramatic societies and film clubs.

 

For those of us already involved, the value of this grassroots activity and the positive effects that taking part can have on our health and wellbeing might seem obvious BUT there are many people who don’t know about the groups that meet on their doorstep or may be apprehensive about going along for the first time.

 

Each May, Voluntary Arts Week shines a spotlight on cultural groups across the country and publicises a range of events that invite people to ‘get creative’ on their doorstep.

 

The events that make up the festival programme are run by groups and organisations of all shapes and sizes – connecting more people with arts activity happening locally and boosting awareness of the voluntary arts on a national level.

 

There are lots of ways for groups to get involved in Voluntary Arts Week, from opening up your usual meeting and making it welcoming to new people, to putting on a ‘come and try’ session or group exhibition.

 

Voluntary Arts Week is also a great opportunity to do something special, this could mean taking your creativity outdoors as part of a group Flashmob, CraftBomb or Woollen Woods, organising a collaborative event with other groups in your area or staging a drop-in workshop in your local shopping centre.

 

There are lots more event ideas on the Voluntary Arts Week website along with event toolkits and useful links that offer practical guidance on how to organise, list and publicise your event .

 

Apply to the Voluntary Arts Week Microfund – we will award 40 pots of £100 groups that plan to reach out to new participants and volunteers as part of their Voluntary Arts Week event. The aim is that this modest funding will help your group to grow and be more sustainable in the long term.

 

Last year groups used this money to cover venue costs, Facebook advertising, materials and refreshments. The Microfund application is straightforward to fill in and is an ideal first funding application for youth-led groups that may not have made a funding application before.
