Stem Central Bioengineering: Mind controlled robots and robot legs

Our most recently published context for STEM Central “Bioengineering” provides a rich basis for learning in sciences and technologies.  The BBC reports on Claire Lomas. Following an horse riding accident in 2006, Claire was told she would never walk again. Now, using the ReWalk bionic walking device, Claire has set off on her Marathon challenge, aiming to finish within three weeks of the start on 22 April 2012.

Reminder – Marks on the Landscape National challenge: Design a billboard for Scotland


There is still time for learners to enter this Education Scotland challenge to design a double-sided billboard to be seen by people entering and leaving Scotland.

The design challenge is being run through the Marks on the Landscape website <http://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/marksonthelandscape/index.asp> , an interdisciplinary learning resource focused on creativity skills, within the learning context of the land regeneration project Fife Earth. The challenge is aimed at those working within second, third and fourth curriculum levels.

Simple Acts is about inspiring individuals to use small, everyday actions to change perceptions of refugees. Through Glow TV you can join weekly events that highlight individual acts such as learning about a refugee experience, cooking a dish from another country and finding out about the new Spirit Project. The series is on every Wednesday morning at 11 am.

Science is part of our everyday life and Life Sciences are particularly important, with stories on the news nearly every week telling us about new medical technologies and treatments for diseases. Science requires individuals with many skills and interests – and not all scientists work in a laboratory. The panel for this session al have different jobs and their qualifications, training and experiences are varied.

Children’s photography exhibition a resounding success

The winning photographs in the Art in the Windows project were unveiled to the public in Cupar on Friday (27 April), and over 200 people came to see them.
Pupils from the four primary and secondary schools in Cupar worked with a professional photographer on the ‘Art in the Windows’ project for two months, photographing themselves getting active around the town to inspire Cupar residents to get moving.

This performance celebrates the life and legacy of Jimmy Reid, the trade unionist and one

of the leaders of the 1971-2 Work-in at the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders. Created by

Glasgow-based theatre company Visible Fictions, it is part of a project coinciding

with the 40th anniversary of the Work-in. The project addresses the meaning of work

in contemporary Scotland, specifically in relation to Clydeside.


Big Dance Schools Pledge 2012 (English and Gaelic)

The Big Dance Schools Pledge 2012 is a mass participation event taking place all over the UK and around the world on the 18 May 2012 – the same day that the Olympic Torch arrives in the UK. Over 260 schools worldwide took in the Schools Pledge 2011 and teachers can now register via the Big Dance 2012 website to receive details on how their school can take part in 2012.

Youngsters invited to take part in Glenrothes photo competition

Young people in Glenrothes are being asked to celebrate their town’s public art in a photo competition that will culminate in an exhibition in Rothes Halls this summer. Historic Scotland has recently recognised the importance of Glenrothes public art by listing several sculptures, and the agency has also produced a free downloadable booklet offering maps and trails. These unique art works are being recognised by Historic Scotland with a competition that aims to reflect the diverse and exciting range of 140 public sculptures, which have become integral to the town’s character.

The “My Place” photo competition is open in two categories, under 16 years old, and 16 and over, with prizes for all winners.
