We’ll guarantee to every individual school that takes part that their chosen artwork will be displayed in the village – your pupils’ work could end up in the bedroom of Usain Bolt, Tom Daley or any of the talented athletes coming to Scotland from all over the world. For the past 25 years Suzanne has been an academic researcher, studying babies innate ability to communicate and connect with other people. In 1993, Suzanne took up an academic post in the UK as a Developmental Psychologist at the University of Dundee and has remained there since, currently holding the post of Honorary Fellow. She is an inspiring and thought-provoking speaker that we can highly recommend hearing.
Suzanne has loved what the field of Developmental Psychology has taught her, why it is that a child’s earliest years have such a profound effect on their later years, including their emotional security, their trust in others, their self-confidence, their relationships, their connectivity. Now she wants to help ensure that this knowledge is spread as widely as possible and frequently acts as partner or speaker for a wide range of organisations throughout the UK and abroad including police, educators, health workers, nursery staff, parent groups and children’s theatre groups helping them to better understand the neuroscientific, biological, and psychological evidence concerning the human need for emotional connection, something creativity can be a channel for. Suzanne feels if we overlook emotional connection, then we all pay for it, through the services that governments need to fund such as prisons, mental health programmes, hospitals, fostering arrangements, extra support in schools and other services.

National Trust for Scotland Creative Writing Competition
To mark the 50th anniversary of the National Trust for Scotland’s care of Craigievar Castle – the conservation charity has teamed up with the Press and Journal, Aberdeenshire Writer in Residence Deborah Leslie and the Friends of Craigievar Castle to launch the Craigievar Creative Writing competition.
Entries are invited from school pupils in 2 categories P6 – P7 for Junior Category and S1 to S6 for Senior Category, and all stories must be 500 words and suitable for children under ten years of age.
The winning entry will be chosen by Aberdeenshire’s Deborah Leslie the celebrated author of children’s tales such as the ‘Fyvie Castle Witch Trials’, and the top 2 stories will be performed by Deborah at Craigievar Castle on the 7 and 8 September at a special Family Fairytale Castle day.

Festival of Dangerous Ideas: Thinking Dangerously in Teacher Education?
Walking, Drawing and Extending Sites for Learning
The University of the West of Scotland and the Festival of Dangerous Ideas host a day seminar on Thinking Dangerously in Teacher Education.
This seminar will use initial findings from a Creative Scotland funded cross-faculty research project within UWS, which set out to develop creative interventions across the curriculum through Walking, Drawing and Extending Sites for Learning, to engage education professionals and others in debate about future ways of learning.
The three methodologies of Walking, Drawing and Extending Sites for Learning were devised in response to the ‘change agenda’ in teaching and learning in Scottish schools, following the publication and implementation of the Donaldson Report, Teaching Scotland’s Future.
The seminar will involve a number of presentations and activities from those involved in the project as well as a key note from the internationally renowned Professor Tim Ingold, whose work in the area of social anthropology inspired the project.

Festival of Dangerous Ideas: Dangerous Assessment Conference
Assessment should be an integral part of learning and teaching. Assessment approaches need to promote learner engagement and ensure appropriate support so that all learners can achieve their aspirational goals and maximise their potential. As with all aspects of Curriculum for Excellence, assessment practices should be seen from the perspective of the learner who is afforded an element of personalisation and choice in showing that they have achieved the intended outcomes. At this conference the following questions will be addressed:
- how do we assess a diverse range of evidence?
- how do we assess creative thinking?
- do we trust our own professional judgements?

Creative Conversations – Edinburgh
The fourth of this series of Creative Conversations (and the second of 2013) will be on Tuesday 7th May at 4pm for 4.30 till 5.30pm with wine and canapes afterwards (venue to follow with confirmation of attendance). I am delighted that our Creative Catalyst this session is meteorologist, broadcaster and educationalist, Heather Reid OBE.
Heather will revisit the world of creativity, science and technology for this Creative Conversation. Heather is utterly determined to inspire generations of scientists and is always ready to bring imagination, innovation and real professionalism to so doing. She is bursting with ideas for what we might talk about at the Creative Conversation. If you’re in the least interested in science and remotely concerned about creativity, you should come along – do not miss this one!
As with all previous Creative Conversations, David Cameron will facilitate the discussion and you are invited to continue the conversations afterwards with Heather, David and colleagues over wine and canapes!
