Look out! It’s an invasion by the Vikings, but don’t worry, Robin Hood, Robert the Bruce and the Dragon will protect us. All of these and more can be found in the new exhibition at Annan Museum on Myths and Legends.
This child-friendly exhibition gives a little taster of some of the many mythological characters and historical legends from across the world. From Native American creation myths and Greek heroes to local curses and ghost stories. You will need to be strong to build the replica Totem pole and everyone can try their hand at reading the Norse runes. The exhibition includes interactives, activities and costume. Plus with a selection of historically accurate replica objects for you to examine and handle, you may almost feel the legends come to life.
The exhibition runs from 30 March to 30 April and is open Mon-Sat, 11-4, admission Free. For schools or evening bookings please enquire.
Faith Shorts 2011 gives young people between the ages of 14 and 18 the opportunity to express what their faith means to them in their own words and take this to the global stage by winning the chance to see their film premiered at a ceremony at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

Created as part of the Co-Create partnership between Creative Scotland and Learning & Teaching Scotland the tool is a fun, interactive tool that can be used with a whole class.

This week is music week for the pupils at Smithton Primary school and all the children will be taking part in workshops and performances featuring traditional and contemporary music and song as well as Samba sounds and foot tapping and hand clapping rhythms from around the world.
The music week starts on Monday with a guitar and drum session led by Martin O’Parka. Martin will be demonstrating how contemporary sounds can be produced on guitars and drums while using computers and giving the children the chance to try their hands at creating their own tunes.
Drumming is being used to enhance the learning experience for pupils of all ages. The DfE programme uses percussion creatively as a teaching tool to combine rhythm and recall to deliver memorable lessons which engage pupils on many different levels.
The project is funded by Creative Scotland through the Youth Music Initiative and is managed by Midlothian Council’s Arts and Creativity Team. The funding has allowed the Drumming for Excellence (DfE) programme to be implemented in all Midlothian Primary Schools.
The Developing Global Citizens Team at Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) has responsibility for developing and promoting global citizenship within Curriculum for Excellence and provides guidance, professional development activities and resources to practitioners, schools and local authorities to support the development of whole-school approaches to global citizenship.
Developing Global Citizens incorporates a number of elements and contexts for learning including international education, sustainable development education, education for citizenship, games legacy, Confucius Classroom Hubs and Scotland’s culture and heritage.
LTS recognises the significant contribution and impact made by stakeholder organisations to this area of work and is keen to explore opportunities for further collaboration and partnerships.
Purpose of the event

Africa in Motion (AiM) Film Festival 2011 will take place between 27 October and 6 November and the focus will be on films and events that open doors onto the lives of children and youth in Africa. We will screen films with educational and entertainment aspects as well as films that deal with the challenges faced by African communities and their children. Through African films, Scottish children can learn about the complex realities of growing up in Africa while learning to critically evaluate stereotypical media reports on African famine and war.
Africa in Motion (AiM) is keen to speak to teachers who would be interested in finding out more about African cinema or Africa-related events in or for their schools. We’d like to offer more film events and study guides to accompany screenings. To ensure these areas are developed in line with the Curriculum for Excellence and are relevant to your class work we hope you will be interested in attending an informal meeting on 4th May 2011 at 5pm in the Guildroom at Filmhouse cinema in Edinburgh. The meeting will be co-hosted by Stefanie Van de Peer (Director, AiM) and Nicola Kettlewood (Knowledge & Learning Events Manager, Centre for the Moving Image). Refreshments will be available and participants are invited to stay and see a film that evening at concession prices. This event is the culmination of the Creative Learning Networks project, managed by Children in Scotland in partnership with Creative Scotland. The day is an opportunity to network, exchange and discuss creative practice in relation to children, young people and Curriculum for Excellence.
Contributors will include Joan Parr, Portfolio Manager for Education, Learning and Young People, Creative Scotland and Victoria Pagan, Principal Consultant, ERS Research & Consultancy, who will be reporting on the findings of the national evaluation of Creative Learning Networks. There will also be presentations from local authorities on the development of their Creative Learning Networks, plus an Arts Marketplace with information from arts and cultural organisations.
400 pupils from across West Dunbartonshire will perform at the Mitchell Theatre this week in aid of a leading children’s charity.
The unique musical experience, Class Acts, will be on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 March and will see pupils from 17 primaries and 5 secondary schools singing and playing a variety of music to suit all tastes with all the proceeds from both nights going to ChildLine in Scotland – the NSPCC’s 24-hour helpline service for children and young people.
Sir Ken Robinson, PhD, is an internationally recognised leader in the development of creativity, innovation and human resources. He has worked with governments in Europe, Asia and the USA, with international agencies, Fortune 500 companies, and some of the world’s leading cultural organisations. On Tuesday 8 March he gave a keynote speech to an invited audience of students, staff, guests and colleagues of Creative Scotland, University of Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
