The Rainbow Room

If a child is experiencing difficulties  and unable to  face and respond to the rigours of school and friendship, or is struggling within the mainstream classroom because of ASD, ADHD and other diagnosed conditions, they are supported within the Rainbow Room.

This support runs in a variety of different ways.   We work together(class teachers and support base staff) to identify the need, then support this need through provision of a bespoke timetable and where possible address the issues or barriers to learning that are occurring as a result by working through various emotional literacy programmes with these individuals including:

  • Circle of Friends
  • Seasons For Growth
  • Anger Management Strategies
  • Self-Esteem Groups
  • Other emotional support networks

Other Supports:

We consider all behaviour to be communication and we want to provide holistic care where we meet all our learners’ needs in order to best support them to thrive and succeed.  To further support emotional needs we use various transition and attention skills techniques such as:

  • Soft start & finish, allowing children to attend the base at transition times to provide routine and consistency.
  • Mind-set work using mindfulness techniques and relaxation techniques
  • Sensory diets
  • Reinforcing class and school rules and behaviour expectation.
  • Explicit preparation for changes and transitions.
  • Social stories to reinforce social norms and expectations.
  • Mind-brain-body breaks, to allow students to step outside of the classroom or put their head down.
  • Restorative practices and comic strips to encourage empathy and help children to see things from other point of view/ sort out disputes.
  • Group work to help identify and explore feelings, reflect on personal experiences and behaviour patterns and encourage children to make better choices and express opinions and emotions in a safer and calmer way.
