this week in P5a

This week we have been working on developing a Plot in our imaginative stories. In Maths we have been learning to solve larger multiplication calculations using the box method strategy. We have also been exploring weight through our measurement unit. In Paths we have been looking at problems within friendships and how this can make us feel and act and looking at how these can be resolved positively suing the control signals to help us. In Science we explored floating and sinking using our Titanic context. We learned about what causes something to float or sink, made predictions about some smaller items in our class then carried out an experiment to test out our predictions. In topic this week we also looked at lots of suspects and evidence to decide if we thought any person or thing was to blame for the sinking of the Titanic. Most children concluded that it was a combination of factors that lead to the sinking and they blamed numerous different people!

This week in p5a

Another busy week in p5a!

In writing we have been working on our spooky stories , we have now created the beginning of the story using descriptive and figurative language to describe the setting and introduce the characters.
In reading we have been continuing to use our reading strategies and skills through work on our reading books. We also began Reciprocal reading groups this week, where the Big Boss led the group and we all participated with our own roles.  It was very successful.

In maths we have been focussing on the place value rule for multiplying by 10,100 and 1000 and have incorporated hidden times table facts too.

During Topic time we explored the class system and how this looked aboard the Titanic. We had some very interesting discussions about equality and fairness.

As it was bonfire night this week, we also used this as our stimulus for art and poetry writing.

In health and well-being we have been exploring positive friendships and qualities of a good friend as well as looking at conflict resolutions between friends and building resilience,

Our week

This week in p5a we have continued with our addition and subtraction strategies, focussing on using the algorithm. On Thursday we welcomed parents in to our class to showcase our different maths strategies.  In writing this week we have been working on descriptive settings and using our senses, adjectives and figurative language to uplevel these. We have also begun work on our new reading books and have been able to find and use information from the text and apply our reading strategies. We have been extending our reading skills through a variety of activities with our new books.  We have continued to learn about the Titanic through our IDL time, and have also enjoyed creating some Halloween themes board games this week. During Paths lesson we have been exploring Problem Solving Skills.

Beatson Santa Dash 2025 – Help Us Reach Our Target

Two years ago, our school community came together to raise funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity. Cancer impacts countless lives in different ways, and the Beatson continues to make an incredible difference through its compassionate care and unwavering support.

The Beatson Cancer Charity works alongside the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre – one of the leading cancer care facilities in the UK – providing vital funding for specialist staff, innovative research, and improved patient wellbeing. From emotional support and complementary therapies to cutting-edge treatments and clinical excellence, the charity ensures that patients and their families receive the best possible care at every stage of their journey.

We are proud to continue supporting the Beatson and the life-changing work they do for so many across Scotland.

This year, some of our amazing staff will be taking part in the Glasgow Santa Dash 2025 with Beatson Cancer Charity on Sunday the 7th December at Glasgow Green. Please help us to raise our fundraising target by donating to our Just Giving fundraising page. Click on the link below to access –

This week in p5a

This week p5a have been working hard, in maths we have been working on the algorithm strategy for addition and subtraction. We thought the exchanging would be very tricky but we did really well! We had to remember our number bonds.  In writing we began exploring features of a good setting for our imaginative writing. We created our own spooky Halloween inspired ‘starry nights’ drawings in Art. In PE we began a block on Tennis. We also started our new IDL topic all about the ‘unsinkable’ ship – The Titanic.

This week in p5a we have been working hard in Maths on using the compensation and constant difference strategies for addition and subtraction.
in Literacy we began looking at features of explanation writing, which we will work on next week.  We managed to complete our novel the Queens Nose and have created fabulous storyboards to retell the main events. We have been having fun trying to beat the teacher with our speed spelling too!
In Art we used chalk pastels to create some amazing ocean animals, focussing on colour and blending.

We have been able to discuss our emotions more and talk about our own experiences during our Paths lessons.

This week p5 have been very busy in our learning, we are improving our recount writing skills and using great time openers when sequencing events. Children are trying hard to Uplevel their writing by adding extra information and feelings and using great adjectives to describe.

In maths we have been exploring rounding as well as using what we already know when adding and subtracting multiples of 10,100,1000, first we find the hidden number facts for addition or subtraction then use the rule for multiples. We thought this would be very tricky at first but we are already really good at this, it will help us when using a new addition strategy next week.

In reading this week we have focussed on characterisation and finding evidence in the text as well as working on our metalinguistics and clarifying skills.

Through our IDL context of the Oceans, this week we explored lifecycles and have begun looking at food chains.

In our Paths lessons we have been working on using the Control Signals to help us calm down and deal with problems effectively. We showed great teamwork when solving problems this week.

This week in p5a

Another busy week in p5a!

In maths we have begun exploring strategies to help us solve addition and subtraction problems. We have particularly liked the open numberline.
we are continually consolidating our knowledge of place value as it helps us with all number work, so we enjoyed some active place value tasks this week too.

In writing we have been working on the recount genre, this week we watched a short clip called ‘taking flight’ and wrote some super recounts, retelling the events from the childs perspective.

In reading we continue to work on employing our reading strategies and skills through our novel study.

In our Paths lessons we have been exploring different emotions and how these present as well as looking at resulting behaviours and strategies we can use to support these.
We also use an emotional checkin every morning, where the children all chose the most relevant emojis to have and decide each morning on how they are feeling, this can be changed throughout the day.

As part of our IDL context this week we were exploring the creatures that live in each layer of the ocean in a little more depth and have created super fact files about some of these animals.

We are further developing our teamwork and cooperation skills in PE and in our Creative enquiry sessions.

In maths we began work on Place value and were able to show this outdoors. We have now moved on to strategies for addition and subtraction. Our class novel this term is The Queens Nose, and we have been working hard on applying our reading strategies.  In Writing we have started with Recounts. Our Topic is Ocean Life where we have been very engaged in our learning.
