This Week in Primary 1a…

We have had a very busy and exciting week in class!

In numeracy, we have been continuing our work on subtraction and have even started using larger numbers. Everyone has been working incredibly hard to try out different strategies and build their confidence—well done, boys and girls!

In literacy, we are learning new sounds and beginning to read and write CVC words. We are encouraging the children to have a go, learn from their mistakes, and listen very carefully to the sounds they can hear in each word. It’s wonderful to see their enthusiasm growing each day.

We also enjoyed a lovely assembly to celebrate Scottish Book Week, where we learned more about the importance of reading and sharing stories. Some children were also confident to stand up in front of the school and talk about or read their favourite book. The children were especially excited to take part in our school book swap, choosing new stories to enjoy.

As part of Scottish Book Week, we visited the Barmulloch Library. There, we learned how the library works, coloured our favourite book characters, and even picked a book to bring back and read in class. We were very lucky to have a beautifully sunny—although very cold!—day for our trip.

Our nativity rehearsals are now well underway! We are learning songs, actions, and some of us even have lines to memorise. Please continue to support your child at home as they practise their part so we can give our very best performance in the show.

What a fantastic week of learning and excitement! We can’t wait to see what next week brings. 🌟📚✨

Another Busy Week in Primary 1A!

What a wonderful and busy week it has been in Primary 1A!

In numeracy, we have been learning how to subtract numbers up to 10. The children have been using lots of different strategies and resources to help them understand taking away — they’re becoming real subtraction superstars!

In art, we explored symmetry by creating beautiful leaf prints using paint. The results were amazing — colourful, creative, and perfectly symmetrical!

During literacy, we have been working hard on sequencing the story of The Three Little Pigs. Everyone enjoyed retelling the story in order and describing the Big Bad Wolf using some fantastic adjectives.

We also learned about Remembrance Day and why people wear poppies. The children showed great understanding and respect during our two-minute silence — such a proud moment for their teacher. ❤️

In the playroom, we’ve been exploring the Enchanted Forest, filled with imagination and creativity. The children have built houses for the Three Little Pigs, drawn symmetrical creatures, constructed bridges over bubbling lava pools, and retold stories using puppets.

As always, there’s been lots of fun, laughter, and fantastic learning happening all around. Well done, Primary 1A — what an amazing week!

Primary 1A Weekly Update

This week, Primary 1A have been very busy learners!

In Literacy, we focused on the sounds ‘f’ and ‘o’. The children enjoyed practising how to form the letters and spotting where they could hear these sounds in words — at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end. They are becoming fantastic sound detectives!

In Maths, we explored symmetry and had fun finding symmetrical patterns and shapes around us. We also continued practising our addition skills, using different strategies to help us solve number problems.

In Topic, we learned about Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate Bonfire Night. The class discussed how to keep safe around fireworks and shared some brilliant safety tips.

Finally, we’ve started learning the songs for our Nativity — the children are already singing beautifully, and we can’t wait to share their performance with you all soon!

Well done, Primary 1A, for another fantastic week of learning! 🌟

🎃 Spooktacular Fun and Learning in Primary 1A! 👻

What a spooktacular week it has been in Primary 1A! We’ve been busy learning and having lots of fun along the way.

In literacy, we learned new sounds and practised reading some tricky words. We’ve also been blending simple CVC words and using adjectives to describe different characters — our witches and monsters were certainly interesting (and sometimes a little scary!).

In maths and numeracy, we’ve been working hard to make more complicated repeating patterns and learning how to add two numbers together to find the total.

As part of our health and wellbeing learning, we talked about what makes us feel angry and explored different strategies to help us calm down before we react. Everyone shared brilliant ideas on how to manage big emotions.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Halloween without some extra fun! We had a fantastic time at the Halloween disco with lots of fabulous costumes — superheroes, dancers, and more! We even made our own paper pumpkins to decorate our classroom.

What a frightfully fun week it has been!
🎃 Happy Halloween, everyone! 🕸️🦇

Term 2 Adventures Begin!

It’s Term 2 already! Primary 1a have returned after the holidays full of energy, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn.

This week, we’ve been busy exploring repeating patterns using pegs, people, colours, and shapes — creating some wonderfully colourful designs!

In numeracy, we’ve been learning about the story of 10, working with number bonds. The children chose a number and found their partner to make a total of 10. Fantastic teamwork and number sense on display!

In literacy, we’ve been revising our letter sounds — please keep practising these at home too. Our story focus has been Room on the Broom, and we’ve had great fun writing descriptions of the witch and retelling the story in lots of different ways.

During music, our tutor helped us explore halving numbers through rhythm and song. We started with 8 actions, halved to 4, then 2, then 1 — and finished with a big “Bananas!” to celebrate our success! We also learned that “forte” means loud and “piano” means quiet — how clever are we? 🎶

In our playroom, we’ve been learning about forces through our Room on the Broom theme — exploring push, pull, and friction. Activities included hammering pegs into pumpkins and racing cars on different surfaces.

A quick reminder: P.E. is on Monday and Friday. Please send in a P.E. kit that can stay in school during the week and go home on Fridays for washing.

We’ve had a magical start to Term 2 and can’t wait for all the learning adventures ahead!

Weekly Blog – End of Term 1 🌟

This week has been full of creativity, imagination, and learning!

In Maths, we continued exploring 2D and 3D shapes, building on our understanding through hands-on activities and discussions. The children have been fantastic at spotting shapes all around them and describing their properties with growing confidence.

In Literacy, we listened to the story ‘The Wishing Star’ and thought carefully about what we would wish for if we had one magical wish. The children’s ideas were thoughtful, imaginative, and full of kindness.

We also enjoyed an autumn-themed activity — listening to and colouring a cheerful scarecrow, followed by the story ‘The Scarecrow’s Wedding’. The children loved predicting what might happen next and sharing their ideas before and during the story. Their engagement and curiosity made for some wonderful discussions!

Later in the week, we read ‘Beautiful Oops’, which helped us learn that mistakes can lead to beautiful new ideas. We practised this by creating our own imaginative drawings starting from just a simple line — and the results were amazing!

As Term 1 comes to a close, we’re so proud of how well the children have settled into school life. They’ve shown enthusiasm, resilience, and a real love of learning.

Have a fantastic holiday, everyone — take time to rest, relax, and recharge your batteries ready for Term 2! 🍂✨

Primary 1a went on a bear hunt!!

We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing and fun-filled holiday weekend! It’s been wonderful to see Primary 1a return to school full of energy, enthusiasm, and ready to learn.

This week, we’ve been continuing with our exciting Journeys topic by exploring the story “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.”

We took our learning outdoors and stepped straight into the pages of a storybook!

Armed with our imaginations (and a good dose of courage), we went on our very own bear hunt around the school grounds. From swishy-swashy grass to squelchy-squerchy mud, we explored it all, retracing the exciting steps from the beloved story.

We tiptoed through the playground, crept past the trees, and peeked into all the secret corners of our outdoor space… and guess what? We even think we saw a bear! 👀

There was a rustle… a shuffle… and a shadow that looked very suspicious. Was it really a bear? We’re not quite sure – but we ran all the way back just in case!

It was a brilliant mix of storytelling, movement, and imagination – and we loved every minute of it. Outdoor learning helps bring stories to life, we weren’t just reading a book… we were living it.

The children have really enjoyed diving into the adventure, and have been busy creating story maps to help us retell the tale in our own words. We’ve also been bringing the story to life through yoga, which has been a fantastic way to combine movement and imagination!

In the classroom and for homework, we’ve started our very first reading books – an exciting milestone! We’ve been introducing punctuation by looking at capital letters, finger spaces and full stops as we read. The children have also been spotting repeated patterns in the text and identifying familiar sounds we’ve been working on in class.

Please continue to practise the sounds that have been sent home to support your child’s reading and writing development. A few minutes of practice each day can make a big difference!

In maths, we’ve been having fun with 3D shapes, copying and creating patterns. We’ve also been working hard on forming our numbers correctly – great focus, Primary 1a!

Thank you for your continued support at home. We’re looking forward to another fantastic week of learning!

Another busy week in P1a

What a fun and action-packed week we’ve had in Primary 1a!

In PE, we’ve been working hard to develop our movement and balance skills using benches, mats, and hoops. We’ve been climbing, jumping, balancing, and exploring different ways to move safely and confidently around the gym hall.

We also had a visit from our music tutor, who taught us all about pitch and beat. We explored pitch using chime bars—we noticed how the size of the bar changes the sound—and used shakers and maracas to keep the beat while listening to a song from Encanto. It was so much fun moving and playing along with the music!

In the classroom, we’ve been very creative this week. We designed our own space pictures and wrote about our journey into space, describing all the amazing things we could see up there in the stars!

In literacy, we’ve been learning two new sounds: ‘r’ and ‘m’. We’ve enjoyed discovering the actions and stories that go along with each sound, helping us remember and use them in our reading and writing.

In numeracy, we’ve been making continuous patterns and spotting them in all kinds of places—on clothes, in nature, and even in our classroom! It’s amazing how patterns are all around us.

A highlight of the week was a special visit from our grown-ups! They joined us for a Health and Wellbeing lesson where we learned about “Doing the Turtle”—a calming strategy that helps us pause, breathe, and think before we react when we’re feeling upset. It’s a great technique to try at home too!

We’ve worked so hard and had such a great week—we’re definitely ready for a well-earned rest.

Happy holiday weekend from all of us in Primary 1a!

A Week Full of Learning Adventures!

What a busy and exciting week it has been in Primary 1A! The children have enjoyed a wide range of learning experiences, and it’s been fantastic to see their enthusiasm and curiosity growing each day.

In Maths, we’ve been exploring 2D shapes and having lots of fun spotting them in our classroom and around the school. Circles, squares, triangles and rectangles are everywhere once you start looking! Alongside this, we’ve been continuing to build our number skills up to 10 – counting forwards and backwards, forming numbers carefully, and working out which number is missing from a sequence. The children are becoming confident little mathematicians!

In Literacy, we’ve been focusing on the initial set of sounds: SATPIN. The class have been playing games and completing fun activities to help them hear and recognise these sounds at the beginning – and sometimes even at the end – of words. It’s been great to see how quickly they are picking things up! Next week, we’ll be introducing two new sounds.

We’ve been excited to begin our brand new topic – Journeys! The children have really enjoyed sharing how they travel to school each day, from walking and cycling to coming by car or bus. It’s been lovely hearing about the different ways we all get around!

We’ve also been talking about some of the places we’ve visited on special journeys with our families – from trips to the park and the beach to exciting holidays and visits to see relatives. Everyone had brilliant ideas about where they’d like to go next – from fun day trips to faraway dream destinations!

As part of our topic, we’ve started looking at different signs in our environment. We’ve been learning to recognise the shapes of signs and talking about what they mean. This has sparked some great conversations and has helped us build our awareness of the world around us.

A special highlight this week was a visit from the Evening Times photographer, who came to take our Primary 1 class photo. The children were very excited and looked so smart and happy for the camera – we’re looking forward to seeing the picture in the paper soon!

Well done, Primary 1A – another fantastic week of learning!
