Pathways to the Senior Phase: Early Learning and Childcare National 5 Skills for Work

This course aims to increase pupil’s awareness of the factors that impact the lives of children and young people, and their families. It helps develop core skills for learning, life and work. It will provide an insight into working in early learning and childcare. It will help develop practical skills required for possible employment in the early learning and childcare sector, particularly interpersonal, communication and practical caring skills.

It is hoped to enhance this course by working alongside and within our local nurseries.

National 4/5

There are 3 mandatory units

  • Development and Wellbeing of Children and Young People
  • Play in Early Learning and Childcare 6 SCQF credit points
  • Working in Early Learning and Childcare

One optional unit.

  • Care and Feeding of Children and Young People

Entry Requirements

  • For National 4 pupils should be working towards a National 4 in English or Communications.
  • For National 5 pupils should have passed National 4 in English or Communications.

Assessment

Pupils must complete written/oral work on each of the outcomes included in all four of the units. This would be presented in a folio which would be examined on a regular basis to ensure the standard is being met. There is no end of year exam for this course.

Progression

Further study/employment and /or training. This course could be the ideal steppingstone for a wide variety of careers, such as early learning and childcare, teaching, nursing and sports coaching.
