Today was Election Day in P5a!

The children have been discussing their local community, Govanhill. In their political parties, they have worked together to decide on ways they would like to improve the area for its residents. This week, the children wrote persuasive speeches to present their manifesto.

This morning, they entered their polling station…

First, they registered to vote. The children learned that people must register before they can vote in an election.

One political party at a time, we listened to each manifesto. The main themes that were addressed were health care, education, opportunities for children and transport. As they spoke, a friend in the class used a rubric to assess their speech based on their content and their delivery. Each political party was given a score for their speaking skills.

After hearing five strong arguments, it was time to vote! The children learned that the voting process is private and since we had no booth (like a real polling station!) they lined up outside and one at a time, entered their polling station to vote. They put a cross in one box to elect a leader of Govanhill.

The votes were counted! We had four spoiled ballot papers as some children put a tick instead of  a cross. This taught them the importance of following the instruction on the ballot paper to ensure their vote is counted.
